Abstract The phase gradient in a sliding-charge density wave (CDW), which is observable as a longitudinal shift, q ∝∂ φ /∂ x , of the CDW satellite peak position, is due to the conversion free-electrons↔CDW-condensate, at the current electrodes. Using high resolution X-ray scattering techniques and time-resolved techniques, we monitor, on thin NbSe 3 whiskers, the shift, q ( x ), and its relaxation, q ( t ), upon switching off the current.

Mechanism of the Peierls phase transition in (TaSe4)2I

Despite abundant experimental work, the origin of the Peierls phase transition in (TaSe4)2I remains, as yet, unknown. By taking advantage of the very anisotropic elastic properties of this compound, we propose a mechanism for the Peierls phase transition in (TaSe4)2I, where both electronic and elastic degrees of freedom are taken into account.
