Since CP violation was first observed in the decay of the long-lived neutral kaon into two pions [1], it remains one of the enigmas in particle physics. Whilst CP violation is manifest in neutral kaon decays, the search for CP-violating effects has elsewhere been unsuccessful. In the phenomenology of CP violation in the neutral kaon system [2], the short- and long-lived mass eigenstates are usually defined in terms of the CP eigenstates K1 (CP = + 1) and K2 (CP = - 1) as Ks ≈ K1 + ?K2 and KL ≈ K2 + ?K1. The parameter ? describes CP violation induced by kaon state-mixing. Direct CP violation may also occur in the decay of K2 into two pions with a relative amplitude ?′, which is non-zero in the case of a phase difference between the amplitudes A0 and A2 for the decay into isospin O and 2 states of two pions. Before the present measurement, all experimental results were compatible with ? = 2.27 × 10-3 exp (i 43.70) and with the Superweak Model [3], in which state-mixing is the only source of CP violation and ?′ = 0. In the Standard Model with six weakly interacting quarks [4], direct CP violation as well as state-mixing is introduced by transitions via heavy-quark intermediate states. Based on this, a small, but non-zero, value of ?′ is predicted [5]. To a good approximation, ?′ /? is related to the double ratio R of the relative decay rates of the long- and short-lived neutral kaons into two neutral and two charged pions as Re (?′/?) = 1/6 × (1 - R).

A detailed study ofJ/ψ hadronic production has been performed in a high statistics experiment (more than 1.5 106J/ψ observed in their dimuon decay mode). Data have been taken with incident π±,K±,p±, on hydrogen and platinum targets, at 150, 200 and 280 GeV/c. We find from the observed nuclear dependance of the cross sections, that about 18% of theJ/ψ are produced diffractively. Using known structure functions of the quarks in the nucleon and in the pion, we derive estimations for the gluon structure functions.

A high-statistics measurement of the differential cross-sections for neutrino-iron scattering in the wide-band neutrino beam at the CERN SPS is presented. Nucleon structure functions are extracted and theirQ2 evolution is compared with the predictions of quantum chromodynamics.

Abstract The phases of the CP-violating amplitudes in K0→π+π− and K0→2π0 decays, φ+−=46.9°±2.2° and φ00=47.1°±2.8°, have been measured in the same experiment, and a direct comparison gives the phase difference φ00−φ+−=0.2°±2.9°. This result leads to an upper limit on possible CPT violation in the K0 mass matrix, of |(m K 0 −m K 0 )/m K 0 | −18 at the 95% confidence level and is the most stringent test of the equality of particle and antiparticle masses.

We have studied high statistics samples of dimuon events (∼35,000) produced from π± on platinum target in the mass interval 4.2≦Mμμ≦8.5 GeV at 150, 200 and 280 GeV/c. The π structure function is obtained by a fit ofd2σ/dx1dx2 to π+ and π− data. At 200 GeV, the simultaneous use of π+ and π− data allows a separate determination of the valence and sea structure functions of the π. Furthermore, the 150 and 280 GeV data allow an accurate determination of the shape of the valence structure function and give an estimate of its evolution betweenQ2=25 and 50 GeV2.

From the analysis of multimuon events produced by π− interactions at 150 and 280 GeV/c in the NA3 spectrometer, we present evidence for the production of two J/ψ mesons in the same interaction (13 events seen, for an expected background of about 0.2 events). Some possible production mechanisms are described and an estimation of the cross section is given.

Abstract We have measured the absolute cross section for dimuon production in hadron collisions at 200 GeV/c in the continuum region M = 4–8.5 GeV. In all the channels studied (pN, p N, π±N and π−H2) the experimental cross section is significantly larger by a factor of 2.3 ± 0.5 than expected from the Drell-Yan model. Furthermore, our proton-nucleon data allow a determination of the nucleon valence structure function which agrees with the deep inelastic lepton scattering data.
