Polar effects in the copolymerization reactions of aconitic acid and some of its esters with nonpolar monomers

Studies of the copolymerization of aconitic acid and some of its esters with nonpolar monomers indicate that electrostatic effects occur due to the acid hydrogen of the free acid. These changes are such that normal methods of interpretation of reaction data no longer apply. A method of interpretation, based on a treatment by Laidler and Landskroener, of the effect of dipole-dipole interaction on the reaction rate is presented. This interpretation is tested with the experimental results available.
