Microstructure Evolution During Short Term Creep of 9Cr–0.5Mo–1.8W Steel

P92 steel (9Cr–0.5Mo–1.8W) was subjected to a heat treatment of 1050xa0°C/30xa0min/air cooling/780xa0°C/120xa0min/air cooling followed by 1080xa0°C/30xa0min/air cooling/740xa0°C/60xa0min/air cooling to obtain tempered martensite microstructure, for better creep strength. Stress rupture tests carried at 600xa0°C in the range of 250–350xa0MPa resulted in rupture times in the range of 200–3000xa0h. Straight line plot of stress rupture curve indicated no major change in deformation mechanism. Coarsening of precipitates and substructure development were the main reasons for microstructure degradation, consequently leading to reduced hardness of the sample. Gauge and grip portions of the same sample were sectioned to comparatively evaluate the effects of stress and aging. Gauge portion of 3000xa0h sample showed considerable change in the microstructure in terms of boundary migration, while that of grip portion hardly evolved. The ruptured samples exhibited predominantly ductile fracture with elongated cavities at higher rupture times.

The present work has been carried out on an AA7010 aluminium alloy so as to optimize the retrogression and re-aging (RRA) schedule that leads to the optimal combination of mechanical properties and stress corrosion cracking (SCC) resistance. The alloy is heat treated at different retrogression temperatures for varying retrogression time and subsequently the window for optimization of retrogression parameters of RRA schedule is established after re-aging. It is found that retrogression at 473xa0K for 35xa0min results into the best combination of the above properties. The enhancement in mechanical properties and SCC resistance is due to the formation of discontinuous and coarse precipitates along the grain boundaries and also the copper enrichment of the precipitates that occur during optimum RRA schedule. It is established that proper control of the process parameters is essential to control the final microstructure and thereby enhance the mechanical properties and SCC resistance of the alloys.
