The Preparation of Zeolite/Ag Composite Powders by Electroless Deposition Process

Mehmet Uysal; R. Karslioğlu; Harun Gul; S. Aslan; S. Y. Keskin; S. C. Okumus; Ahmet Alp

Core-shell Ag-coated zeolite composite powders were synthesized using silver electroless deposition process, which was carried out in an ammonia-based coating solution containing silver nitrate as a precursor material. The influence of the chemical components and powder concentration in the Ag coating was investigated by scanning electron microscopy, energy dispersive spectroscopy, and X-ray diffraction techniques. The zeolite/Ag composite powders were fabricated in order to find an antibacterial material and a new implant material based on the microstructural change of zeolite/Ag composites powders using different parameters of Ag deposition.

Wear Behavior of Bronze Hybrid MMCs Coatings Produced by Current Sintering on Steel Substrates

R. Karslioğlu; Mehmet Uysal; Ahmet Alp; Hatem Akbulut

In this work, a bronze matrix (90 wt% Cu + 10 wt% Sn) was reinforced with SiC and graphite particulates using mechanical alloying and a subsequent current sintering technique. The mechanically ball-milled bronze hybrid matrix composite powders reinforced with 5.0 wt% SiC and 5.0 wt% graphite were cold-compacted on a 1040 steel substrate under a pressure of 300 MPa. The compacted structure was sintered at atmospheric conditions to nearly a full density within 10 min using current sintering, in which the powders were heated by a low voltage and high current and compressed simultaneously. The samples were sintered at three different applied currents (1,500, 1,700, and 1,900 A) to provide dense and well-bonded coatings on steel substrates. Microhardness testing and optical and scanning electron microscopes (SEM) were used for microstructural characterization of the hybrid composites. The tribological characterization of the resulting composites was tested by a block-on-disk method for determination of the wear loss and friction coefficient behaviors against a steel disk. It was pointed out that increasing applied current during the sintering/coating process resulted in obtaining high-hardness and wear-resistant hybrid composite coatings.

A comparative wear study on Al-Li and Al-Li/SiC composite

S. Cem Okumus; R. Karslioğlu; Hatem Akbulut

Aluminum-lithium based unreinforced (Al-8090) alloy and Al-8090/SiCp/17 vol.% metal matrix composite produced by extrusion after spray co-deposition. A dry ball-on disk wear test was carried out for both alloy and composite. The tests were performed against an Al2O3 ball, 10 mm in diameter, at room temperature and in laboratory air conditions with a relative humidity of 40-60%. Sliding speed was chosen as 1.0 ms−1 and normal loads of 1.0, 3.0 and 5.0 N were employed at a constant sliding distance of 1000 m. The wear damage on the specimens was evaluated via measurement of wear depth and diameter. Microstructural and wear characterization was carried out via scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The results showed that wear loss of the Al-8090/SiC composite was less than that of the Al-8090 matrix alloy. Plastic deformation observed on the wear surface of the composite and the matrix alloy, and the higher the applied load the greater the plastic deformation. Scanning electron microscopy examinations of wear ...
