Abstract We have measured the differential cross section for p- 4 He elastic scattering at proton kinetic energies of 0.56, 0.80, 1.03, 1.27 and 1.73 GeV in a range of four-momentum transfer squared between 0.006 and 1.2 (GeV/ c ) 2 . The cross section has the usual diffraction minimum which decreases in depth with increasing energy. This data is consistent with contemporaneous data from Berkeley, but disagrees, particularly in the normalization, with earlier data from Brookhaven and Saclay.

Abstract Deuteron tensor and vector analyzing powers have been measured for the first time in p- d elastic scattering at 800 MeV proton laboratory energy for a - t range between 0.032 and 1.038 (GeV/ c ) 2 . The data provide a very sensitive test of the multiple scattering theory at intermediate energies. The inclusion of the noneikonal correction in the Glauber diffraction theory is essential in the description of the data, especially for -t ⪆0.2 (GeV/ c 2 ), where discrepancies of up to 150% are observed with the theory based on the eikonal approximation.

Abstract Large deuteron vector and tensor asymmetries have been measured for the first time at imtermediate energies. We have used a 2 GeV polarized deuteron beam whose tensor and vector components were 0.75 and 0.25, respectively. The tensor and vector quantities P yy and P yy were extracted from data obtained with the beam polarization normal to the scattering plane, and P xx was obtained when the polarization was precessed into the scattering plane. Analysis of the data using multiple scattering theory demonstrates the considerable sensitivity of the data to the quadrupole form factor of the deuteron and to the double spin flip components of the NN amplitudes.

Large angle π±p elastic scattering cross sections have been measured between 2 and 9 GeV/c in fine intervals of incident momentum and scattering angle. The data are used to test predictions of the quark parton model and the statistical bootstrap model.

The symmetry in the elastic scattering of polarized protons from helium has been measured at beam momenta of 1.2, 1.5 and 2.0 GeV/c and in the interval of three‐momentum transfer, q, region between 0.3 and 5.5 fm−1 (step size ∠0.1 fm−1). The beam polarization was approximately 70% and the beam intensity varied between 0.4–1.5 ×109 particles/burst. The polarization is found to depend sensitively on the beam momentum near q=2.2 fm−1, which is the region where single and double scattering display interference effects in elastic scattering. In the q region where triple scattering begins to be predominant, the polarization displays a change in slope.

S. C. Ems; S.W. Gray; D. R. Rust; R. Klem; Y. L. Cho

New results from the Argonne ZGS on the scattering asymmetries of inclusively produced pions are presented. The preliminary data is for the reaction p↑→π−+X near X=0 for a Pt range extending past 1.0 GeV/c.

Tensor and vector asymmetries in p‐D↘ elastic scattering at 800 MeV

Deuteron vector and tensor asymmetries were measured for the first time in p‐D↘ elastic scattering at 800 MeV in −t range between .02 and 1.0 (GeV/c)2. Considerable sensitivity of the data to the multiple scattering mechanism and the form of the N‐N amplitude was found.

Polarization in large angle proton‐neutron elastic scattering

Y. Makdisi; M. L. Marshak; B. Mossberg; E. A. Peterson; K. Ruddick; J. Roberts; R. Klem

The authors have measured the large angle polarizatlon asymmetry A in the proton-neutron elastic scattering at 2,3, and 6 GeV/c using the polarlzed proton beam at the Argonne ZGS and a liquid deuterium target. These measurements, the first at high energy, show that A is large (20-40%) and negative at the larger angles, larger and opposite slgn to pp scattering, and wlth no decrease with incident energy, unlike the earlier data at smaller angles. At 90~ where A for pp is constrained to be zero because of particle identity, the np asymmetry Is increasing wlth energy, reaching approximately -.3 at 6 GeV/c, in conflict with the basic constituent interchange model which predicts A for np scattering to be 0 at 90=CM.
