The Two Arm Photon Spectrometer TAPS - comprising 384 plastic-BaF2 scintillator telescopes - was tested with monochromatic photons in the energy range between 45 and 790 MeV. The energy resolution for a collimated photon beam hitting the central detector module was determined to sigma/E = 0.59% X E(gamma)-1/2 + 1.9% (E, given in GeV). For the the fast scintillation component alone sigma/E = 0.79% X E(gamma)-1/2 + 1.8% has been measured. The position resolution of the point of impact amounts to DELTAx = 2 cm (FWHM) at the highest energies which corresponds to 30% of the diameter of an individual module. Monte Carlo simulations using the code GEANT3 are in good agreement with the experimental results.

Quasifree photoproduction of eta mesons off nucleons bound in the deuteron has been measured with the CBELSA/TAPS detector for incident photon energies up to 2.5 GeV at the Bonn ELSA accelerator. The eta mesons have been detected in coincidence with recoil protons and recoil neutrons, which allows a detailed comparison of the quasifree n(gamma, eta)n and p(gamma, eta)p reactions. The excitation function for eta production off the neutron shows a pronounced bumplike structure at W=1.68 GeV (E{gamma} approximately 1 GeV), which is absent for the proton.

Abstract Properties of the Roper resonance, the first scalar excitation of the nucleon, are determined. Pole positions and residues of the P 11 partial wave are studied in a combined analysis of pion- and photo-induced reactions. We find the Roper pole at { ( 1371 ± 7 ) − i ( 92 ± 10 ) } MeV and an elasticity of 0.61 ± 0.03 . The largest decay coupling is found for the Nσ ( σ = ( π π ) - S -wave). The analysis is based on new data on γ p → p π 0 π 0 for photons in the energy range from the two-pion threshold to 820 MeV from TAPS at Mainz and from 0.4 to 1.3 GeV from Crystal Barrel at Bonn and includes further data from other experiments. The partial wave analysis excludes the possibility that the Roper resonance is split into two states with different partial decay widths.

Differential cross sections of the reactions (gamma,pi(0)pi(0)) and (gamma,pi(0)pi(+/-)) have been measured for several nuclei (1H,12C, and (nat)Pb) at an incident-photon energy of E(gamma)=400-460 MeV at the tagged-photon facility at MAMI-B using the TAPS spectrometer. A significant nuclear-mass dependence of the pipi invariant-mass distribution is found in the pi(0)pi(0) channel. This dependence is not observed in the pi(0)pi(+/-) channel and is consistent with an in-medium modification of the pipi interaction in the I=J=0 channel. The data are compared to pi-induced measurements and to calculations within a chiral-unitary approach.

Total and differential cross sections for photoproduction of eta mesons from C-12, Ca-40, Nb-93 and Pb-nat have been obtained up to 790 MeV incident photon energy at the Mainz Microtron (MAMI) with the TAPS spectrometer. The absorption cross section sigma(eta N)(abs) = (30 +/- 2.5 +/- 6) mb of eta mesons in nuclear matter and the absorption length lambda(eta) = (2.0 +/- 0.2 +/- 0.4) fm are extracted. No significant depletion of the S(1)1(1535) strength in the eta photoproduction on nuclei is observed.

Neutral pion photoproduction from the proton near threshold

Abstract Differential and total cross sections for the photoproduction of neutral pions from the proton have been measured for incident photon energies from 140–270 MeV, using the photon spectrometer TAPS at the tagged photon beam of the 855 MeV Mainz Microtron. The energy dependence of the s- and p-wave multipoles close to threshold was deduced from a multipole fit and a multipole analysis. The extracted s-wave amplitude E 0+ at threshold is found to be significantly smaller than the prediction of the classical low energy theorems, but is in reasonable agreement with the chiral perturbation theory.

Improved light yield of lead tungstate scintillators

Alexander Annenkov; A Borisevitch; A. Hofstaetter; M. Korzhik; V Ligun; P. Lecoq; O. Missevitch; R. Novotny; J.-P. Peigneux

Abstract The application at medium and low energies of lead tungstate scintillators, so far optimized for the ECAL calorimeter of CMS for the future LHC, is strongly limited by their poor light yield. Suitable dopants like molybdenum and terbium can help to overcome this problem. Concepts, results, advantages and drawbacks of this approach are discussed.

Information on hadron properties in the nuclear medium has been derived from the photoproduction of omega mesons on the nuclei C, Ca, Nb, and Pb using the Crystal Barrel/TAPS detector at the ELSA tagged photon facility in Bonn. The dependence of the omega-meson cross section on the nuclear mass number has been compared with three different types of models: a Glauber analysis, a Boltzmann-Uehling-Uhlenbeck analysis of the Giessen theory group, and a calculation by the Valencia theory group. In all three cases, the inelastic omega width is found to be 130-150 MeV/c(2) at normal nuclear matter density for an average 3-momentum of 1.1 GeV/c. In the rest frame of the omega meson, this inelastic omega width corresponds to a reduction of the omega lifetime by a factor approximately 30. For the first time, the momentum dependent omegaN cross section has been extracted from the experiment and is in the range of 70 mb.
