X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy of the effects of Ar+ ion sputtering on the nature of some standard compounds of Zn, Cr, and Fe

R. Steinberger; J. Duchoslav; M. Arndt; David Stifter

X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy combined with Ar+ ion etching is a powerful concept to identify different chemical states of compounds in depth profiles, important for obtaining information underneath surfaces or at layer interfaces. The possibility of occurring sputter damage is known but insufficiently investigated for corrosion products of Zn-based steel coatings like ZnCr. Hence, in this work reference materials are studied according to stability against ion sputtering. Indeed some investigated compounds reveal a very unstable chemical nature. On the basis of these findings the reliability of depth profiles of real samples can be rated to avoid misinterpretations of observed chemical species.

Electronic Stopping of Slow Protons in Transition and Rare Earth Metals: Breakdown of the Free Electron Gas Concept

D. Roth; B. Bruckner; M.V. Moro; S. Gruber; D. Goebl; J. I. Juaristi; M. Alducin; R. Steinberger; J. Duchoslav; Daniel Primetzhofer; P. Bauer

The electronic stopping cross sections (SCS) of Ta and Gd for slow protons have been investigated experimentally. The data are compared to the results for Pt and Au to learn how electronic stopping in transition and rare earth metals correlates with features of the electronic band structures. The extraordinarily high SCS observed for protons in Ta and Gd cannot be understood in terms of a free electron gas model, but are related to the high densities of both occupied and unoccupied electronic states in these metals.
