Abstract The 27 Al( 3 He, d) 28 Si reaction has been used to populate states near the 27 Al+p threshold and the ensuing proton and alpha decay has been measured. No evidence for new 27 Al(p , α) 24 Mg resonance strength was observed and consequently revised limits have been placed on the thermonuclear reaction rate. As a result, the 27 Al(p , α) 24 Mg reaction is found to be astrophysically unimportant at red-giant and nova temperatures.

The 0/sup 0/ differential cross sections for the /sup 11/B(..cap alpha..,n)/sup 14/N, /sup 12/C(..cap alpha..,n)/sup 15/O, and /sup 24/Mg (..cap alpha..,n)/sup 27/Si reactions were measured at E/sub ..cap alpha../ = 47.4 MeV. Well-known states of high spin in /sup 15/O were used to determine the excitation energy of states in /sup 14/N and /sup 27/Si. Several states of high excitation energy in these nuclei are reported. The energies of these states are consistent with particle-hole weak coupling calculations for high spin states. Comparisons with previous experiments are made where possible.
