Abstract Fifteen measurements of the solar neutrino flux have been made in a radiochemical 71 Ga- 71 Ge experiment employing initially 30 t and later 57 t of liquid metallic gallium at the Baksan Neutrino Observatory between January 1990 and May 1992. This provides an integral measurement of the flux of solar neutrinos and in particular is sensitive to the dominant, low-energy p-p solar neutrinos. SAGE observed the capture rate to be 73 −16 +18 (stat.) −7 +5 (syst.) SNU. This represents only 56%−60% of the capture rate predicted by different Standard Solar Models.

Abstract The (α, d) reactions on 24, 26Mg , 28,30 Si, 32,34 S, 36,38,40 Ar and 42 Ca at beam energies from 34 to 40 MeV were performed to search for ( f 7 2 2 )7 + levels in order to confirm and extend systematics observed by previous investigators. Supplementary ( 3 He, p) experiments on 24 Mg, 28 Si and 32 S were also performed. DWBA calculations proved quite useful in interpreting the experimental results. In addition, the 25 Mg(α,t) and 27 Al(α, 3 He) experiments were conducted to further distinguish the ( f 7 2 2 7 + states from ( d 5 2 f 7 2 )6 − levels in 26 Al and 28 Al. The latter states are expected to be populated with significant strength in (α, d) as are ( f 7 2 2 )7 + states. A nearly linear dependence of the (α, d) Q -values to the 7 + states versus atomic mass holds for all the s-d shell nuclei studied here. This Q -value linearity ends as the f 7 2 shell begins to fill although regularities are still apparent. A systematic and similar behavior of ( d 3 2 )3 + states was also observed.

Abstract The systematics of particle-hole states in the 2s-1d and 1f 7 2 shells have been analyzed in terms of the Bansal-French-Zamick weak coupling method. States considered are d − 3 2 f n 7 2 (J = 3 2 + ), ( s−d ) n 7 2 (J = 7 2 − ) and ( s−d ) n f 2 7 2 (J = 0 + and 7 + ) , the j n components corresponding to even-even ground states.

Abstract Q-values for the (p, t), (p, 3He) and (p, d) reactions for twenty-five isobaric analog states in the 1 f 7 2 shell have been accurately measured. The corresponding experimental displacement energies are compared with recent model predictions.

Abstract The Soviet-American Gallium Experiment is the first experiment able to measure the dominant flux of low energy p-p solar neutrinos. Four extractions made during January to May 1990 from 30 tons of gallium have been counted and indicate that the flux is consistent with 0 SNU and is less than 72 SNU (68% CL) and less than 138 SNU (95% CL). This is to be compared with the flux of 132 SNU predicted by the Standard Solar Model.

A radiochemical {sup 71}Ga-{sup 71}Ge experiment to determine the primary flux of neutrinos from the Sun began measurements of the solar neutrino flux at the Baksan Neutrino Observatory in 1990. The number of {sup 71}Ge atoms extracted from initially 30 and later 57 tons of metallic gallium was measured in fifteen runs during the period of January 1990 to May 1992. The observed capture rate is 70{plus_minus}19 (stat){plus_minus}10 (syst) SNU. This is to be compared with 132 SNU predicted by the Standard Solar Model.

Abstract Using high-resolution techniques the inelastic scattering of 35 MeV protons by 206 Pb was measured. Approximately 180 levels with excitation energies up to 6.8 MeV were identified and angular distributions of most of these states were measured. The L -transfers and deformation parameters are determined by comparison of the measured angular distributions to collectivemodel calculations. Microscopic calculations of natural-parity states are presented and allow a test of RPA and TDA wave functions. Unnatural-parity states were also studied microscopically and permit an examination of the central and noncentral forces in the effective interaction.

Abstract The five-nucleon pickup reaction 70 Zn( 3 He, 8 B) 65 Co has been employed to observe the T z = 11 2 65 Co nucleus. The 65 Co mass excess is found to be −59168±20 keV. Comparison is made to recent predictions.

A radiochemical [sup 71]Ga-[sup 71]Ge experiment to determine the primary flux of neutrinos from the Sun began measurements of the solar neutrino flux at the Baksan Neutrino Observatory in 1990. The number of [sup 71]Ge atoms extracted from 30 tons of gallium in 1990 and from 57 tons of gallium in 1991 was measured in twelve runs during the period of January 1990 to December 1991. The combined 1990 and 1991 data sets give a value of 58 [plus] 17/ [minus] 24 (stat.) [plus minus] 14 (syst.) SNU. This is to be compared with 132 SNU predicted by the Standard Solar Model. 2 tabs, 1 fig, 14 refs.
