ENERGY AND NITROGEN METABOLISM IN LACTATING COWS FED GRADED QUANTITIES OF AMMONIUM LACTATE

L.S. Bull; R.W. Hemken; R.A. Erdman; J. O'leary

The inclusion of an ammonium lactate product of whey fermentation in the rations of lactating cows results in a reduction in intake at levels of total lactate greater than 6.5% of the ration. However, the energy consumed is utilized with equal efficiency in all diets studied. A trend toward more tissue deposition and elevated urinary nitrogen output suggests that the limitation on use for milk production is the ability to use the ammonia in the rumen.
