Abstract Angular correlations of deuterons and α-particles have been measured for the 12 C ( 14 N , d ) 24 Mg ∗ (α) 20 Ne ( g.s. ) reaction. No evidence is found for the direct transfer of a 12C nucleus populating the 13.45 MeV (6+) state of 24Mg. Angular correlations for this state and several others are relatively featureless. This result is in disagreement with a recently published measurement.

The nucleus 24Mg has long been a testing ground for many nuclear models. Descriptions in terms of the shell model, the cranked deformed shell model, and the a-cluster model nicely reproduce the low-lying rotational behavior of 24Mg [1–3]. One of the most fascinating predictions of nearly all cluster models, as well as for cranked Nilsson-Strutinsky calculations for 24Mg, is the existence of an exotic structure corresponding to a linear chain of 6 α particles. In 24Mg, this 6a particle chain would be expected to lie well above the threshold for decay into 6 a particles. The identification of this decay mode thus presents an intriguing and difficult experimental challenge.

Complete angular distributions (theta/sub c.m./ = 9/sup 0/--90/sup 0/) for the reaction /sup 13/C( /sup 13/C,..cap alpha..) /sup 22/ Ne in the energy range E/sub c.m./ = 6.25--13.38 MeV have been measured. The data exhibit significant resonancelike behavior and a portion of it has been fitted to extract the amplitudes and phases of the relevant l values with two methods. The first uses a least-squares procedure to fit the angular distributions to a linear sum of Legendre polynomials while the second makes a grid search to find a best fit to an amplitude squared equation.
