Abstract The aim of the article is to evaluate and address the limits of an existing approach to the analysis of the thematic concentration of text. To overcome these limits, the article proposes and applies both a modification of the measurement of thematic concentration – known as secondary thematic concentration and proportional thematic concentration – and methods for their statistical testing. The results show that the modification, as well as the application of the proposed tests, enhances the possibilities for analysing the thematic characteristics of text. The article uses 20 Slovak texts of the same genre written by one author.

Morphological annotation constitutes essential, very useful and very common linguistic information presented in corpora, especially for highly inflectional languages. The morphological tagset used in the Slovak National Corpus has been designed with several goals in mind – the tags are compact and easily human-readable, without sacrificing their informational contents. The tags consist of ASCII letters, numbers and several other characters. In general, they have a variable number of symbols, but their order is obligatory, and each category or specific feature is assigned a particular character, which can be shared among several parts of speech. The tagset is highly functional and pragmatic, although some allowances had to be made to accommodate the traditional analysis of Slovak morphology and part of speech categories.

In this paper the first preliminary results of the analysis of marks collected within the tables of META-NET series of Language White Papers of CESAR project languages are demonstrated. Although they are preliminary results, we can consider them useful for showing us where real gaps in language resources and tools can be detected.
