Constrained optimization is very important issue in engineering design. The problem of constrained optimization contains the objective function with linear and nonlinear constraint equations. In this paper the Improved Cuckoo Search (ICS) algorithm has been applied for solving problems of constrained engineering optimization, which gives better solutions than the standard CS algorithm and the other optimization algorithms used in solving engineering problems from the literature. In the proposed ICS algorithm, dynamic change of parameters of probability and step size is introduced, which are constant in the standard algorithm.

This paper presents the optimum synthesis of a four-bar linkage in which the coupler point performs a path composed of rectilinear segments and a circular arc. The Grashof four-bar linkage whose geometry provides minimum deviations from the given problem for certain parts of the crank cycle is chosen. The motion of the coupler point of the four-bar linkage is controlled within the given values of allowed deviations so that it is always in the prescribed environment of the given point on the observed segment. The synthesis process tends to bring only those path segments that are beyond the boundaries within the prescribed boundary deviations. During the synthesis, allowed deviations change from the initial maximum values to the given minimum ones. Groups of mechanisms realising satisfactory approximation to the desired motion can be obtained by the method of controlled decrease of allowed deviations with the application of the Differential Evolution (DE) algorithm.

In this paper, Subpopulation Firefly Algorithm is proposed for optimization of machining parameters in multi-pass turning and multi-pass face milling operations. Basic Firefly Algorithm is modified with the aim to avoid space of local minimum and to meet the operation constraints in each iteration step. For that purpose, the following modifications are made: one firefly population is divided into two, a crossover operator is introduced and the searching for new design variables is continued until constraint functions are fulfilled. For turning operation, optimization is carried out for one objective: minimization of production cost. For face milling operation, multi-objective optimization is used for minimizing production cost and machining time, and maximizing profit rate at the same time. In both cases of multi-pass machining operations, optimization process implies meeting all operation constraints. For multi-pass turning operation, the best results from literature are confirmed with good convergence and low value of standard deviation. For multi-pass milling operation, better results are achieved compared with existing results from literature. The proposed algorithm showed capability of achieving global optimum for complex optimization problems.

The paper presents a methodology for modeling profile of two circular-arc cams, which is based on the application of homogeneous coordinate transformation method. Analytical expressions that allow complete determining of all design parameters and coordinates of all the points of two circular-arc cams profile are defined. Also, analytical expressions for determining the kinematic performance such as displacement, velocity, acceleration and jerk are derived. The defined methodology is applied on concrete examples for which the analysis of the kinematic performance is also performed. Additionally, it is shown that a proper choice of the design parameters can significantly affect the improvement of the kinematic performance, especially the reduction of jerk as one of the most unfavorable occurrences in these mechanisms. The given methodology allows very efficient determination of all input data for parametric modeling and production of two circular-arc cams on numerical machines. This approach allows the fulfillment of one of the most important requirements of modern production–reduction of time necessary for design and manufacturing which causes reduction of costs.
