Heavy metals in agricultural landscapes as hazards to human and ecosystem health: a case study on zinc and cadmium in drainage channel sediments.

BACKGROUND In agricultural systems, heavy metals pose severe risks to the health of soil-plant-animal-human continuum. Drainage channels, as integral components of agricultural landscapes, contain sediment material that can be both a source and a sink of metals and other toxic/persistent elements due to its highly reactive interfaces and strong binding affinity. The drainage channel network in a case study area of Vojvodina (Serbia) is not appropriately protected from contamination, nor is it maintained regularly (e.g. by desilting), thus endangering and potentially decreasing the ecological value of surrounding water and agricultural land resources, i.e. exposing food production to potential contaminants. In this study (2004-2012), Cd and Zn concentrations were analysed in 100 samples from 46 drainage channels sediments spread along the areas of the most intensive agricultural land use in Vojvodina. RESULTS Among the samples measured, 5% had Cd and 14% had Zn concentrations above the maximally permitted levels, indicating that some drainage channel sections have been exposed to different point and non-point source pollutants. The maximum detected concentrations of the analysed elements were >50% (Zn) and were as much as 11-fold (Cd) higher than their remediation values. CONCLUSION There is a strong need for the establishment of qualitative monitoring of channel sediment media in agro-ecosystems closely linked with complex pollution sources (intensive agriculture, industry, urban zones).

Iskorišćenost prirodnih resursa Vojvodine za navodnjavanje

Znacajne povrsine plodnog obradivog zemljista dobrih proizvodnih svojstava i raspoložive kolicine vode, kao najznacajniji prirodni resursi i potencijali, cine da Vojvodina ima povoljne uslove za intenzivniji razvoj i primenu navodnjavanja. Takođe, postoje realne potrebe za navodnjavanjem jer zemljistu i gajenim biljkama tokom vegetacionog perioda nedostaje oko 100 do 300 mm vode. Sve cesce se ispoljava manjak i neodgovarajuca unutargodisnja raspodela atmosferskih padavina. Osnovu vodnih resursa predstavljaju reke Dunav, Tisa i Sava, niz manjih prirodnih vodotoka, osnovna (ukupne dužine 930 km) i detaljna (20.000 km) kanalska mreža koje pružaju mogucnost zahvatanja dovoljnih kolicina vode za potrebe navodnjavanja. Najveci deo povrsina navodnjava se vodom iz prirodnih vodotoka i kanala (preko 90%) i to najcesce vestackom kisom (80-90%). Među navodnjavanim povrsinama dominiraju oranice i baste (oko 95%) dok su ostale pretežno pod vocnjacima (5%). Navodnjavane povrsine zauzimaju ukupno 20-30 hiljada hektara. Razvojni potencijali su daleko veci.

Monitoring kvaliteta vode i sedimenta manjih vodotoka u Vojvodini - primer vodotoka Tatarnica

U radu se analizira stanje kvaliteta vode i sedimenata kanalisanog vodotoka Tatarnica. Ovaj vodotok predstavlja i glavni kanal jednog od sistema za odvodnjavanje, koji je lociran dvadesetak kilometara zapadno od Novog Sada (Vojvodina, Srbija). Kvalitet vode i sedimenta ovog vodotoka, pored ostalog, znacajan je zbog toga sto se njegove vode koriste za navodnjavanje povrtarskih kultura na okolnim obradivim povrsinama ali i zbog toga sto se uliva u Dunav u zoni akvatorije posebne ekoloske vrednosti, parka prirode Begecka jama. Na osnovu mesecnog uzorkovanja vode i analize relevantnih indikatora kvaliteta, tokom perioda 2006-2012. godine, prikazani su rezultati sedmogodisnjeg monitoringa kvaliteta vode i sedimenata. Prema vecini relevantnih parametara kvaliteta, u najvecem broju uzoraka, voda ima dobar ekoloski potencijal. Međutim, konstatovana je i povremena pojava vode neodgovarajuceg kvaliteta, najcesce kada je u pitanju organsko zagađenje iskazano preko povecanih vrednosti bioloske i hemijske potrosnje kiseonika (BPK 5 i HPK) kod oko 35% uzoraka. Odstupanja od zahtevanog kvaliteta vode konstatovana su i kod ostalih parametara u oko 10-25% uzoraka. Sastav sedimenata, po svim razmatranim parametrima, uglavnom je u granicama koje nemaju negativne posledice na životnu sredinu u kanalu i njegovom okruženju.

Sustainability of the Constructed Wetland Based on the Characteristics in Effluent

The constructed wetland (CW) in the settlement of Glozan is the first system of its kind for wastewater treatment constructed in Vojvodina (Serbia), aimed at treating local municipal wastewater. The common reed Phragmites australis , naturally growing at the CW location, was used as biofiltering vegetation. The monitoring effectiveness of the CW was based on removing suspended solids and reducing the amount of organic matter. The eight-year long study shows that the age of the constructed wetland does not significantly affect the changes (increase) in concentration of suspended particles and organic compounds from the wastewater effluent. We proved that measured values of variables, suspended solids, and biochemical oxygen demand (BOD 5 ) of effluent belong to the same population. The chronological data series of suspended solids and BOD 5 of effluent were processed using statistical tests of homogeneity, both parametric (Students t-test with Fishers F-test) and nonparametric (Mann-Whitneys U-test). The results of testing homogeneity of the data confirm that the constructed wetland has not been compromised, and that the removal of suspended solids is 93-96% and reduction of organic compounds, expressed in terms of BOD 5 , is up to 79-84%.

Procjena specijacije kadmija u saliniziranim okolišnim uvjetima

Povecanje saliniteta i sadržaja elemenata u tragovima u povrsini tla putem neodgovarajucih praksi gospodarenja zemljistem (fertirigacija, aplikacija kondicionera tla) predstavlja jednu od najrasirenijih prijetnji sigurnosti i zastiti hrane u suvremenoj poljoprivredi. Fitodepozicija, kao najznacajniji nacin unosa biotoksicnog i neesencijalnog kadmija (Cd) u ljudske namirnice, korespondira pozitivno sa salinitetom rizosfere. Pomocu kemijsko specijacijskog racunalnog pristupa (Visual MINTEQ) procijenjen je biogeokemizam Cd-kontaminirane (1µM) otopine s razlicitim razinama (nizak-visok) jednih od najzastupljenijih prirodnih minerala (Na + 15-150, Cl - 12-90 i SO 4 2- 1.5-30 mM) u sirokom pH (3.5-9.5) rasponu i niskom prisustvu otopljenog organskog ugljika (1 mg DOC/L). Na temelju modeliranih rezultata, koncentracija slobodnog Cd 2+ je dominirala u vecini testiranog pH raspona kod niskog saliniteta, dok su u okruženju srednjeg do visokog saliniteta prevladavale koncentracije Cd-Cl- i Cd-SO 4 -kompleksiranog sadržaja Cd. NICA-Donnan modeliranjem je potvrđena važnost Cd-organo-kompleksiranog sadržaja jedino pri visim pH vrijednostima (>8.0) i nižem salinitetu. Rezultati potvrđuju da kao posljedica smanjenog otopljenog organskog sadržaja uslijed povecanog saliniteta (npr. prirodno salinizirana tla, vode koristene za navodnjavanje u poljoprivredi) biogeokemizam Cd u rizosferi može pospjesiti mobilnost Cd, a time i njegovu fitoekstrakciju od strane navodnjavanih kultura.
