A practical approach for measuring IT-support of business processes

Rahil Hosseini

Information technology (IT) is playing vital role in todays business success. It has been proved that IT services directly effect on business processes performance and organization success. A main factor, which is directly related to IT performance, is functionality of IT services and their support of business processes. In every organization measuring IT functionality in business processes is an important problem, which many business managers are concerned about it. Most IT metrics measure IT services performance without considering their effect on business processes. Therefore a general practical approach for measuring IT services functionality and their effect on doing business process is very essential. In this paper a practical approach for measuring the amount of IT services functionality and their support of business processes has been proposed. By using this approach, we can measure the amount of IT functionality for each business process and total amount of IT support of organization. The amount of this metric helps manager to find out their strength and weakness and improve performance of business processes by utilization of IT services and elevates IT to its rightful place in organization.

A robust hybrid fuzzy–simulated annealing–intelligent water drops approach for tuning a distribution static compensator nonlinear controller in a distribution system

Hajar Bagheri Tolabi; Rahil Hosseini; Mahmoud Reza Shakarami

This article presents a novel hybrid optimization approach for a nonlinear controller of a distribution static compensator (DSTATCOM). The DSTATCOM is connected to a distribution system with the distributed generation units. The nonlinear control is based on partial feedback linearization. Two proportional-integral-derivative (PID) controllers regulate the voltage and track the output in this control system. In the conventional scheme, the trial-and-error method is used to determine the PID controller coefficients. This article uses a combination of a fuzzy system, simulated annealing (SA) and intelligent water drops (IWD) algorithms to optimize the parameters of the controllers. The obtained results reveal that the response of the optimized controlled system is effectively improved by finding a high-quality solution. The results confirm that using the tuning method based on the fuzzy-SA-IWD can significantly decrease the settling and rising times, the maximum overshoot and the steady-state error of the voltage step response of the DSTATCOM. The proposed hybrid tuning method for the partial feedback linearizing (PFL) controller achieved better regulation of the direct current voltage for the capacitor within the DSTATCOM. Furthermore, in the event of a fault the proposed controller tuned by the fuzzy-SA-IWD method showed better performance than the conventional controller or the PFL controller without optimization by the fuzzy-SA-IWD method with regard to both fault duration and clearing times.

An Improved Algorithm for Deadlock Detection and Resolution in Mobile Agent Systems

Rahil Hosseini; Abolfazl Toroghi Haghighat

Mobile agent systems have been proved that are the best paradigm for distributed applications. They have potential advantages to provide a convenient, efficient and high performance distributed applications. Many solutions for problems in distributed systems such as deadlock detection rely on assumptions such as data location and message passing mechanism and static network topology that could not be applied for mobile agent systems. In this paper an improved distributed deadlock detection and resolution algorithm is proposed. The algorithm is based on Ashfield et. al. process. There are some cases in which original algorithm detects false deadlock or does not detect global deadlocks. The proposed algorithm eliminates the original algorithm deficiencies and improves its performance. It also minimizes the detection agent travels through the communication network. Also it has a major impact on improving performance of the mobile agent systems

A fuzzy-ExIWO method for optimal placement of multiple DSTATCOM/DG and tuning the DSTATCM’s controller

Hajar Bagheri Tolabi; Afshin Lashkar Ara; Rahil Hosseini

Purpose – The purpose of this paper is optimal placement of multiple distribution static compensator (DSTATCOM) and Distributed Generation (DG) units along with nonlinear control of the DSTATCOM in order to loss reduction, voltage drop improvement, increase in the voltage stability and improvement of the performance of the controller of the DSTATCOM. Design/methodology/approach – A combination of a fuzzy system and expanded invasive weed optimization (ExIWO) has been employed for solving the nonlinear/complex problem. A nonlinear control has been designed based on partial feedback linearization (PFL) theory for the DSTATCOM and proportional-integral-derivative (PID) controllers have been employed to trace the reference values. Findings – A combination of a fuzzy system and ExIWO has been employed for solving the nonlinear/complex problem. A nonlinear control has been designed based on PFL theory for the DSTATCOM and PID controllers have been employed to trace the reference values. Practical implications –...

Novel FGbSA: fuzzy-Galaxy-based search algorithm for multi-objective reconfiguration of distribution systems

Hajar Bagheri Tolabi; Mahmoud Reza Shakarami; Rahil Hosseini; Shahrin Md. Ayob

Reconfiguration according to different criteria is an important problem in distribution systems. This paper presents a new method for optimal multi-objective reconfiguration of distribution system based on the Galaxy-based Search Algorithm (GbSA). To avoid the convergence problem, the input and output data are normalized in the same range using fuzzy sets. The main objectives of the proposed algorithm have been considered as power loss reduction, voltage profile improvement and increase of the system load balancing. The proposed technique has been investigated using the IEEE 33-bus test system and a real distribution network i.e. Tai-Power 11.4-kV distribution system. The obtained results revealed the superiority of the proposed fuzzy-GbSA method in terms of accuracy compared to the GbSA and other intelligent search algorithms such as Genetic Algorithm (GA) or Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO). Furthermore, the proposed algorithm efficiently converged to the optimum solution compared to the other intelligent counterpart algorithms.

A Practical Approach for Measuring IT Effectiveness in Business Processes

Rahil Hosseini; Mahdi Mazinani

Information technology (IT) is an important component in organizations competitive advantages. IT services directly effect on business processes and organizations success. It is essential to adapt the IT function with business objectives and priorities, and work toward the optimization of IT resources globally for higher performance of the organization. Most companies spend too much time for determining how much money to spend on IT and not enough time determining how to manage and allocate their IT spending in any part of business processes. Seeking high-performance results from the use of IT is very important for business executive managers and information technology managers in every organization. In this paper a practical approach for measuring the amount of IT effectiveness on business processes by using a fuzzy approach that is known as MADM (multiple-attribute decision making) has been proposed. The amount of this metric enables managers to discover exactly where business performance improvement opportunities lie and finally elevates IT function to its rightful place in organizations.
