Genetic Algorithms: Concepts, Design for Optimization of Process Controllers

Rahul Malhotra; Narinder Singh; Yaduvir Singh

Genetic Algorithm is a search heuristic that mimics the process of evaluation. Genetic Algorithms can be applied to process controllers for their optimization using natural operators. This paper discusses the concept and design procedure of Genetic Algorithm as an optimization tool. Further, this paper explores the well established methodologies of the literature to realize the workability and applicability of genetic algorithms for process control applications. Genetic Algorithms are applied to direct torque control of induction motor drive, speed control of gas turbine, speed control of DC servo motor for the optimization of control parameters in this work. The simulations were carried out in simulink package of MATLAB. The simulation results show better optimization of hybrid genetic algorithm controllers than fuzzy standalone and conventional controllers.

Simulation & Performance Analysis of Wired and Wireless Computer Networks

Rahul Malhotra; Vikas Gupta; Renu Bansal

In this paper, performance analysis of the Wireless and Wired computer networks through simulation has been attempted using OPNET as simulating tool. For wired networks, the performance parameters like delay and throughput have been investigated with varying transmission links and load balancers. The load-balancing has been analyzed through parameters like analysis of traffic sent and traffic received. While in wireless networks the metrics like delay, retransmission attempts and throughput have been estimated with varying physical characteristic and buffer size. From the obtained results, it is gathered that performance of the wired networks is good if high speed Ethernet links like 1000 Base X and server-load balancing policy are used whereas the performance of Wireless LAN can be improved by fine tuning and properly choosing the WLAN parameters. For the tested simulation scenarios the performance is observed to be better with wireless networks using infra-red type physical characteristics and higher buffer size (1024Kb).

Design of Embedded Hybrid Fuzzy-GA Control Strategy for Speed Control of DC Motor: A Servo Control Case Study

Rahul Malhotra; Narinder Singh; Yaduvir Singh

paper, DC motor speed control models were mathematically extracted and implemented using artificial intelligence techniques. Due to multivariable and non-linear in nature, it is difficult to achieve the optimum speed of the motor. Conventional PI controller gives the maximum overshoot problem. To overcome the maximum overshoot, artificial intelligence techniques have been incorporated in the controller architecture. Fuzzy logic controlled model of DC motor is implemented, investigated and further optimised by the genetic algorithm for the optimal fuzzy rule base. Digital signal processor TMS320LF2407A is also tested to control the speed of servo motor. The transient time, steady state response and the performance criteria IAE and ITAE of the above controllers have been investigated. The result shows that the fuzzy logic- GA integrated approach has minimum overshoot, and minimum transient and steady state parameters, which shows the more effectiveness and efficiency of FLC-GA hybridisation than FLC and conventional PI model to control the speed of the motor.

An Investigation of Use of Information and Communication Technology on Creativity of Perspective Teachers and Students of Technical Education

Anu Malhotra; Veena Bana; Rahul Malhotra

We are living in an age, where creativity, achievement, knowledge and innovation are powering the world at an ever increasing pace. The genes of this revolution are information and communication technologies. Information and communication technologies (ICT) are increasingly being used to deliver on promises of universal education. It is an important tool for delivering education around the world. Creativity is a talent, or as a characteristic of an eminent people. Creativity is not only an innate ability, but due to the habitual nature of it as a response of any given situation, it is a lifestyle, or an attitude towards life. To analyze the comparative effect of information and communication technology (ICT) on creativity questionnaire technique was adopted as the data collection instrument. The predictive variable for this study is Creativity, which is dependent on CriterionFluency, Flexibility and Originality. The research was conducted on perspective teachers and Students of technical Education. 46.965, 45.508 and 20.10,chi square values of Fluency, Flexibility and Originality, indicates the positive impact of use of information and communication technology on Creativity of human.

Denoising, Segmentation and Characterization of Brain Tumor from Digital MR Images

Rahul Malhotra; Minu Sethi; Parminder Kumar Luthra

The objective of this paper is to present an automated segmentation method which allows rapid identification of Tumor tissues/pathological structure with an accuracy and reproducibility comparable to those of manual segmentation. The authors uses the wiener filter for the removal of noise and then applies a new marker based watershed segmentation method using image processing and digital processing algorithms to detect Tumor tissues of Brain. This method is simple and intuitive in approach and provides higher computational efficiency along with the exact segmentation of an image. The proposed technique has been implemented on MATLAB 7.3 and the results are compared with the existing techniques.

Analysis of Intensity Modulation and Switched Fault Techniques for Different Optical Fiber Cables

Rahul Malhotra; Subhash Singh; Harkirtan Singh; Parminder Kumar Luthra

Fiber optics is the fastest and reliable means of transferring large amounts of data Optical fiber links are used for local area networks to world wide data communication. Fiber-optic communication is a method of transmitting information from one place to another by sending pulses of light through an optical fiber. Digital optical communications explores the practical applications of this union and applies digital modulation techniques to optical communications systems. Intensity modulation is a modulation technique in which the optical output power of a source is varied in accordance with some characteristic of the modulating signal. Fiber optics trainer ST 2502, which is a single board fiber optic transmitter receiver module providing two independent fiber optic communication links, is used in the present work. It is used to study and analyze the analog & digital signals modulation in relation to the losses in optical fiber. This work intends to obtain an intensity modulation of a digital signal transmitted over fiber optic cable and demodulate the same at receiver end to get the original signal. Different fiber optic cables namely SIPMMA fiber, thermocouple type K with glass fiber/stainless cables, OFNR cable is used to obtain intensity modulation using digital input signal. It has been investigated that the output of detector is affected with the change in cable and the size of cables also plays an important role in data transmission. The study of switched faults in intensity modulation is also taken up in the study.
