Electride Doping of Soluble High Temperature Polymers

Raimond Liepins; M. Aldissi

Abstract We report on the conductivity of two new Pyrrones and a polyphenylquinoxaline. A new and novel material, cesium electride, was used as the doping agent.

Polymer Bulletin | 1990

Synthesis of rigid rod polymers

Raimond Liepins; Brian C. Benicewicz

SummaryRigid rod polymers containing long rigid side chains have been prepared. The initial approach to this class of materials involved the synthesis of a poly (p-phenyleneterephthalamide) (PPT) backbone with diphenylthiazolothiazole pendant groups. The synthesis and preliminary characterization of the monomer and polymer are reported.

Beta-silicon carbide whisker-polymer composites

Raimond Liepins; J. McFarlan; B. Jorgensen; Brian C. Benicewicz; R. Jahn; D. Cash; J.V. Milewski

SummaryThe beta silicon carbide whiskers, as prepared by the “Los Alamos Process,” have been found to have conductivities as high as 300 (Ωcm)−1. Random, uniform incorporation of these whiskers in two high temperature polymers (polybenzimidazole and polypyrrone) in 10 and 20 wt% concentrations generated films with conductivities as high as 1 × 10−9 (Ωcm) and 1 × 10−5 (Ωcm)−1 respectively. The polymers without the whiskers had conductivities in the 10−10 to 10−17 (Ωcm)−1 range.

Synthesis of soluble conducting polymers: polyacetylenes and polyromatics

Mahmoud Aldissi; Raimond Liepins

Soluble polyacetylene and some of its derivatives and soluble polyaromatics have been synthesized by exposure of the monomer, in an arsenic trifluoride solution, to aresenic pentafluoride gas, at temperatures varying between room temperature and –90 °C; and instantaneous polymerizations is observed, and the obtained polymers are completely soluble in acetone, methylene dichloride, or tetrahydrofuran.

Polymerization of Acetylene in Liquid Crystal Media

M. Aldissi; Raimond Liepins

Abstract The synthesis of polyacetylene in a new class of solvents - liquid crystals - will be reported. The effect of the solvent molecules orientation in the polymers structure and its properties will be discussed.
