Laminar and turbulent flows of dilute polymer solutions: A physical model

Franz Durst; Raimund Haas; W. Interthal

It is well known that diluted high-molecular polymer solutions give rise to drastic flow effects; for example, in laminar flow through porous media, a pressure drop increase of up to thirty times the value of the flow of the pure solvent is observed, whereas in turbulent wall bounded flow, a pressure drop decrease or drag reduction of up to 80% or five times lower than the Newtonian value is measured. Although both these dramatic influences on the flow are caused by the same polymers, dissolved in the same solvent and employed in the same concentration range, the effects are usually interpreted by different models in the literature. The reason for this is the apparent contrariety of the observed polymer effects in laminar and turbulent flows.

Viscoelastic flow of dilute polymer solutions in regularly packed beds

Raimund Haas; Franz Durst

It is well known that dilute polymer solutions may exhibit strong viscoelastic flow effects when exposed to elongational flow fields with elongation rates that exceed certain “Onset”-conditions. Such flow fields occur in the converging-diverging flow passages of a porous matrix but also in regularly packed beds of spheres.

Die Charakterisierung viskoelastischer Fluide mit Hilfe ihrer Strömungseigenschaften in Kugelschüttungen

Raimund Haas; Franz Durst

AbstractThe viscoelastic flow behaviour of dilute macromolecular solutions is investigated experimentally using the flow through randomly packed beds composed of glass beads with a narrow size distribution. The concept of the Deborah number is applied to describe the observed polymer effects. To model the polymeric liquids and to derive extensional viscosity equations the kinetic theory of dilute dumbbell solutions is used treating the macromolecules as finite extendable, nonlinear-elastic dumbbells. In this way two parameters (b, τH) are obtained which characterize the behaviour of the macromolecules when these are stretched in elongational flow fields. The flow through porous media can be classified as such an extensional flow. The viscoelastic behaviour and the relaxation times of various polymer solutions are investigated by systematically varying the fluid velocity and bed characteristics of the porous media and the polymer-solvent-temperature conditions of the used polymer solutions. The experimental results are in good agreement with the theoretical predictions obtained by the dilute dumbbell theory.
