Fast and dense embedded arrays for microprocessors in CMOS-technology

Rainer Clemen; E. Eisenbraun; Walter Fischer; Werner Dipl Ing Haug; K Helwig

Abstract As the speed of microprocessors has increased considerably by wider dataflow (32 bits), increased parallelism, and faster technologies, memory access time becomes a key variable in overall processor performance. The concept of a hierarchical memory structure for closing the performance gap between internal logic and main memory leads to the requirement of an on-chip Cache for highly integrated microprocessors. The technology used for the chip is 1 μm CMOS with one level poly-silicon and three levels of metal.
