Das Abgassystem für den BMW- Reihensechszylinder-Ottomotor mit Twin-Turbo-Technik

Rainer Diez; Nils Rippert

Higher efficiency with cylinder-bank comprehensive exhaust manifold

Rainer Diez; Heinz Kornherr; Frank Pirntke; Jürgen Schmidt

In close interdisciplinary cooperation with BMW Group, Boysen has developed an air-gap-insulated exhaust manifold that encompasses both banks of the 4.4 I V8 spark-ignition twin turbo engine of the BMW X5 M and BMW X6 M. The manifold merges the exhaust gas flow from the cylinders of the left-hand and right-hand cylinder banks in opposing pairs, thus optimising gas exchange. Due to improvements in response, torque and power characteristics of the engine, the cylinder-bank comprehensive exhaust manifiold helps achieve high fuel efficiency.

Effizienzsteigerung durch Zylinderbank-Übergreifenden Krümmer

Rainer Diez; Heinz Kornherr; Frank Pirntke; Jürgen Schmidt

Rainer Diez; Nils Rippert

Turbocharging is likely to play a key role in the development of trend-setting spark-ignition engines of the future. New turbocharger concepts are making a major contribution towards solving the conflict of objectives between the desire for higher engine output and greater driving dynamics on the one hand and the demand for improved fuel economy in modern vehicles on the other. Based on BMW specifications and in close cooperation with various partner companies, Boysen has developed the exhaust system for the 3.0-l six-cylinder inline spark-ignition engine with twin turbo technology. Integrating the two turbochargers presented new challenges for the exhaust system specialist in terms of structural dynamics, flow technology and acoustics.Turbocharging is likely to play a key role in the development of trend-setting spark-ignition engines of the future. Modular exhaust aftertreatment system for a six-cylinder inline spark-ignition engine

Rainer Diez; Frank Bühler

Boysen helped to develop a modular exhaust aftertreatment system for the six-cylinder inline spark-ignition engines from BMW. The assembly comprises innovative tubular manifolds and close-coupled catalytic converters. The flexible design allows the manifold/catalytic converter unit to be easily adapted to the installation situation in different vehicle series. An extensive common parts strategy enabled considerable cost savings to be achieved.

The exhaust system of the BMW M5

Rainer Diez; Volkmar Knipps; Björn Koch

The new BMW M5 is the world’s first high-performance sports saloon to be fitted with a high-revving V10 engine. For the 373 kW power unit, Boysen has developed a dual-line exhaust system consisting of two 5-into-1 equal-length tubular manifolds, two close-coupled and two underfloor metallic catalytic converters, a middle silencer and twin rear silencers. The complete system has been consistently optimised with regard to weight and backpressure and its gas dynamics have been tuned for maximum engine output and optimum torque.
