This paper defines and describes pre-crash functionality in three functional steps. The steps are: PRESET (PREcrash SETting of algorithmic thresholds), PREFIRE (Precrash Firing of reversible REstraints) and PREACT (PRecrash Engagement of ACTive safety devices). The functional steps are described in the order of growing situation analysis performance requirements and an increasing amount of necessary system application effort. Each functional step defines its own range of view, the so-called virtual barrier. The definition of the virtual barrier is subject to various constraints in respect to sensor configuration and pre- crash performance. A more detailed description of PRESET functionality for frontal pre-crash is given together with a test example. Pre-crash sensing technology uses platform radar sensors. The platform sensors are designed for the integration of all possible functions that rely on sensor information from the close surroundings of the vehicle. This integration using one set of platform sensors will reduce cost and development risks.

Increasing precision and robustness are the main drivers for the next generation of air flow meters for automotive applications while cost reduction is the key factor for a successful market entry. This contradiction can be resolved by increasing the sensor intelligence by efficient digital signal processing and by evaluation of all information available within the sensor system. Compared to a stand-alone sensor, further cost reduction is realized by integration of additional pressure and/or humidity sensors in the air flow meter. The information of pressure and/or humidity near the air flow meter provides additional relevant parameters to the engine controller. A digital SENT interface is used to submit the information to the engine controller with a minimum number of wires.
