Combined control of an adaptive 3-tap feed forward and 2-tap decision feedback equalizer employing an adjustment of coefficients by means of conditional bit error ratio (BER) estimation based on forward error correction (FEC) is proposed.

We have shown that conditional BER estimation extracted from FEC decoding is suitable for control of a 3-tap feedfoward equalisation (FFE). The acquisition and OSNR performance have been simulated with this type of feedback signal generation. The proposed method provides a cost efficient feedback signal generation.
