Acute Disseminated (Non-Lipid) Reticuloendotheliosis

Amos Christie; Randolph Batson; John Shapiro; Harris D. Riley; Roy Laughmiller; Millie Stahlman

In several publications Wallgren has dealt with problems related to storage diseases. In 1940 he advanced the idea that the so‐called acute reticulo‐endotheliosis bears close relationship to Schüller‐Hand‐Christians disease and that these two maladies represent only different types of one and the same underlying disturbance. Since then this idea has gained wider acceptance. The eosinophilic granuloma has also become incorporated in the same syndrome. In the following paper some of the inherent problems are discussed in a clinical conference at the Vanderbilt Pediatric Clinic.

Observations on skin resistance to electricity and sweat chloride content. A preliminary report.

Randolph Batson; William C. Young; Frank M. Shepard

Summary Skin resistance to electrical current andsweat chloride values have been reported in 4 groups of children; white children in a control group; Negro children in a control group; white children with cystic fibrosis; and white children with central nervous system disease. The various groups studied could be distinguished both with respect to sweat chloride and skin resistance measurements. Further studies are under way to determine if the test can be developed to be useful as a screening and diagnostic procedure.

Medical and surgical complications associated with severe poliomyelitis.

Harris D. Riley; Randolph Batson

Abstract With newly acquired knowledge, advances in technology, more suitable medical equipment, and broader application of the multidisciplinary approach to total rehabilitation, the complications in severe acute illnesses and chronic disability can be controlled in a much better fashion than previously. The detection and treatment of these complications are usually the same whether they occur in patients with poliomyelitis or in patients with other diseases. It is important that we do not cast aside lessons learned in the management of severe poliomyelitis. We should apply these same methods and techniques to other chronic disabilities, which will certainly increase in number as physicians become more and more proficient in the management of acute illnesses.

Immunization methods and materials

Randolph Batson; Amos Christie

Summary This report concerns materials and methods commonly employed in establishing immunity to diseases for which we can provide specific protection on a practical basis. Because of the recent introduction of new vaccines, a modification of the commonly accepted immunization schedule is proposed.
