Effective Medium Modeling of Fluid-filled Fractured-porous Medium

Ranjana Ghosh; Mrinal K. Sen

The objective of this study is to account for squirt flow in the computation of effective elastic parameters of a rock containing multiple minerals, pores, cracks and fractures. A number of rock physics models exist that consider fluid interaction during wave propagation, but they have certain limitations. In this work, we have introduced a new model based on the Eshelby’s inclusion model and the differential effective medium (DEM) theory. Our effort is to make the new model more general than the existing models. The effectiveness of this work is established through numerical examples and application to modeling of effective elastic parameters of CO2-squestered carbonate rocks that vary in textures and are prone to chemical reactions with the saturating fluid.
