METHODS Ninety-four participants with a spinal cord injury (42 tetraplegics and 52 paraplegics) completed the Spanish version of the Rogers, Chamberlin, Ellison and Crean Scale (1997), designed to measure empowerment. RESULTS The analyses indicated higher levels of empowerment among women. Persons with tetraplegia whose injury was more longstanding also showed greater empowerment. CONCLUSION This study suggests that the capacity to become empowered can vary and evolve and should therefore be promoted in intervention programs.

Imperfect information inevitably appears in real situations for a variety of reasons. Although efforts have been made to incorporate imperfect data into classification techniques, there are still many limitations as to the type of data, uncertainty and imprecision that can be handled. In this paper, we will present a Fuzzy Random Forest ensemble for classification and show its ability to handle imperfect data into the learning and the classification phases. Then, we will describe the types of imperfect data it supports. We will devise an augmented ensemble that can operate with others type of imperfect data: crisp, missing, probabilistic uncertainty and imprecise (fuzzy and crisp) values. Additionally, we will perform experiments with datasets used in other papers to show the advantage of being able to express the true nature of imperfect information.

The application of microarray technology to the diagnosis of cancer has been a challenge for computational techniques because the datasets obtained have high dimension and a few examples. In this paper two computational techniques are applied to tumor datasets in order to carry out the task of diagnosis of cancer (classification task) and identifying the most promising candidates among large list of genes (gene prioritization). Both techniques obtain good classification results but only one provides a ranking of genes as additional information and thus, more interpretable models, being more suitable for jointly addressing both tasks.

An important aspect to consider in applications which work with great volumes of data is that frequently these data are of low quality and also cannot be use other types of data. The field of Soft Computing has dealt, among other things, with developing techniques that will be able to work with these types of low quality data in a suitable way, respecting the true origin of these data. In this paper we present a method to carry out the imputation of missing values from information that may be of low quality when another possibility is not available. The method is based on a predictable model. The imputation method developed is incorporated into the software tool NIP increasing its functionality of imputation/replacement of low quality values.

Objective To assess the behavioural problems of children who have been exposed to intimate partner violence situations, and the moderating effect of mother parenting.OBJECTIVE To assess the behavioural problems of children who have been exposed to intimate partner violence situations, and the moderating effect of mother parenting. METHOD We analysed, using the Child Behavior CheckList, behavioural problems of 46 children between 6 and 16 years, and the relationship between the detected problems and parenting skills shown in the mother-child interaction in shelters. RESULTS Increased behavioural problems were detected in children, compared with normative population. Difficulties in parenting skills in mother-child interaction especially connect with the manifestation of externalizing problems in children. CONCLUSIONS Living in a gender violence environment affects childrens psychosocial adjustment and it damages the victims parental competence. Consequently, the intervention of socio-health professionals with Intimate partner violence victims should pay more attention to detect the difficulties of children and restore the parenting skills of the mothers in order to alleviate the repercussions of gender violence on their children.

One factor which greatly affects the performance of the machine learning techniques is the quality of the dataset with which to work. In this paper we focus on two problems that can affect these data: 1) the existence of irrelevant, redundant features and 2) the existence of low quality values for such features resulting of the measurement process. Most studies focus on solving each problem individually. In this paper we address both problems jointly proposing a feature selection aproach from low quality data. This approach consists of the following steps: (1) feature pre-selection using a discretization process (filter method); (2) Ranking process of the feature pre-selection using a Fuzzy Random Forest ensemble; (3) Wrapper feature selection using a Fuzzy Random Forest ensemble based on cross-validation. Through several experiments the approach shows an excellent performance, not only classification accuracy, but also with respect to the number of features selected.

OBJECTIVES To identify distinct profiles of resilience in people with spinal cord injuries due to traffic accidents and to determine whether the profiles identified are related to differences in subjective well-being. METHODS The Resilience Scale (Wagnild and Young, 1993) and an adapted quality of life scale (GENCAT) were administered to 98 people with physical disabilities due to traffic accidents. RESULTS Cluster analyses identified three different resilience profiles: a high-resilience group, a low-resilience group, and a group showing a predominance of high scores in self and life acceptance and social competence. The results also revealed statistically significant differences among profiles in most domains of subjective well-being. CONCLUSION The results suggest the need to study resilience in greater depth and to design programs to enhance quality of life among people with disabilities due to traffic accidents.
