Abstract Relatively little attention has been given to the differences in value of statistical life (VSL) from developed and less developed countries. The paper derives a cross‐countries VSL estimate based on road fatality accidents and it provides a test to check for such differences. Estimations were obtained from a fixed‐effect hedonic price model applied to a panel of data using new and second‐hand car prices from 27 countries as a dependent variable. The VSL estimate of e6.63 million is in line with results from other studies; and the income elasticity of VSL between countries is close to unity, implying that VSL is approximately proportional to income.

This paper presents the first application of a recently proposed stated preference valuation method called contingent grouping. The method is an alternative to other choice modeling methods such as contingent choice or contingent ranking. It was applied to an afforestation program in the northeast of Spain. The attributes included (and the marginal values estimated per individual) were allowing picnicking in the new forests (€2.47), sequestering 1000 tons of CO2 (€0.04), delaying the loss of land productivity by 100 years, due to erosion in the new forests area (€0.783), and allowing four-wheel driving (€6.5), which is perceived as a welfare loss.

ABSTRACT Based around fieldwork in Seville (Spain), our article provides an empirical analysis with the aim of determining whether different typologies of cyclists exist depending on the type of bicycle for urban commuting (public bicycle/private bicycle). Our findings show that users of public bicycles are predominantly male, young, with a high level of education, and basically use the public bicycle for subsistence trips due to its easy intermodality; while private bicycle riders are mainly females who regularly make nonsubsistence trips and prefer a more flexible bicycle for their daily needs.
