Abstract The method II angular-correlation technique of Litherland and Ferguson has been applied to the reactions 29 Si(α, pγ) 32 P and 31 P(α, pγ) 34 S. In 32 P the state at 1.755 MeV was determined to have J = 3. In 34 S the state at 4.07 MeV was determined to have J = 1, and the state at 4.89 MeV, J = 2. For other low-lying levels in 32 P and 34 S the present results are in agreement with the previously known spin assignments. Some mixing ratios and branching ratios were also determined. The γ-ray spectrum from the reaction 31 P(α, pγ) 34 S was examined with a Ge(Li) detector to determine the excitation energies of the first nine excited states in 34 S and to assist in determining the branching ratios. As a by-product the excitation energies of the first three excited states in 34 Cl populated by the reaction 31 P(α, nγ) 34 Cl were also determined.
