Using 36 proved cases of liver masses, the authors compared the accuracy and limitations of hepatic angiography and liver scanning. Although the scan is just as accurate in detecting liver masses in general as the angiogram, the angiogram can offer additional valuable information.

A normal radionuclide bone image can facilitate distinction between a bone island and significant pathologic processes, especially an osteoblastic metastasis. This distinction becomes more crucial when growth is detected in an isolated sclerotic bone lesion or if a relatively large sclerotic lesion is detected de novo in patients with a known neoplasm. This report presents three patients with isolated bone islands: two with interval growth, the other with a relatively large stable lesion; all showing a normal radionuclide bone image.

The authors present a possible case of specific tumor uptake of 87mSr in a patient with Hodgkins disease. 99mTc sulfur colloid scan and surgical splenectomy confirmed the presence of Hodgkins disease in the spleen. This is the first known report of specific accumulation of radiostrontium in a noncalcified soft-tissue tumor without secondary infection.

We have reviewed the medical records and radiographic examinations of 12 patients with herpes simplex encephalitis to assess the role of RN and CT in the early diagnosis of this disease. The initial RN study was positive in 83% (10/12) of cases while the initial CT study was positive in 75% (9/12) of cases. The earliest positive RN was seen on the second day after the onset of neurologic signs or symptoms while the earliest positive CT was seen on the third day. We describe various abnormal patterns encountered in HSE and discuss their diagnostic reliability. We make recommendations for the diagnosis of HSE based on our findings and on the information available in the literature
