’Light From Shadow’ was an exhibition of holograms curated by internationally-recognised holographic artist Paula Dawson and art historian John Gage. The show brought together oft-cited holograms by artists in the USA, Europe, Japan and Australia (some of which have not been publicly exhibited previously), other historic art works, and Dawson’s newest work, Shadowy Figures (No. 18). They included definitions of work within art categories; problems of mixed-media work and public art; ideas around size and scale; the ever-present dichotomy of process versus product; the problematic relation of technical skills to content and concept; and the roles of critics and collectors. In an era of installation art, digital media and major changes in art industries, these topics are particularly pertinent.
