Linking Qualitative and Quantitative Methods of Analysis Applied to Semi-Structured Interviews: Representations of Handicap. This article presents an exploratory process in methodological research to link the use of computer data processing with a qualitative analysis of categories in a sample of semi-structured Interviews. After presenting the theoretical basis for the analytical grid, and the problems encountered in its application to qualitative material, the authors explain their use of a data base which allows processing the categories with the help of a data segmentation and classification software (AC2). This analysis was carried out secondarily on the catégories established by the researchers in order to produce a more precise representation of the way the different variables were organised, by pinpointing their discriminating power. This automatic method is used as a complementary tool for systematising results obtained with the qualitative method and to support interprétations based on exhaustive consideration of these catégories.

The question of joint placement arises when making the decision to place children of the same siblingship as part of the protective measures taken in the case of parental mistreatment, particularly when there is evidence of mistreatment among the siblings. This paper reviews 219 recent articles addressing the joint placement of brothers and sisters and/or mistreatment within siblingships. The authors refer to the different theories, methods and questions related to this issue and the tools that have been used, as well as the main results are reviewed here. In particular, the indications and contraindications of joint placement of siblings and its effects and factors as well as the psychopathological consequences of intra-sibling violence will also be addressed. This paper shows the need for further research in this area, in particular, so as to refine the methodologies and tools used to analyse the relationships between siblings before, during and after their placement.

This prospective study aimed at shedding some light on the functioning of French support groups for brothers and sisters of children with disabilities. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with the sisters, brothers and parents of children with disabilities along with care professionals. Focus groups were carried out with healthcare professionals directly involved in sibling support groups. The overall results showed that such groups are appreciated and psychologically helpful. This study also identifies several limitations inherent to these groups and proposes a discussion addressing potential areas for improvement.

This study focuses on the qualitative research interview, an essential tool frequently used in the human and social sciences, conducted with children having communication disorders. Two distinct populations are addressed – children with intellectual disability and deaf children without related disabilities – with the aim of identifying the main methodological issues and proposing arrangements to encourage them to express themselves during research interviews. It transpires that the common features between interviews conducted with these two populations relate to the need to get to know the child and his or her environment, resort to visual aids and manage as best one can the investigative relation. The differences between these two populations hinge around both communication (the difficulties experienced by the children in understanding and/or expression) and how the interview is conducted (social desirability shown by the children and strategies in conducting the interview by the researcher).
