Both content driven web authors and application designers may have their attention deviated from their main task when they have to be concerned with the generation of elaborated linking structures. This work aims to demonstrate how a metadata-enhanced web-based open linking service can be exploited towards supporting content driven authors in their tasks. The following results are presented in this paper: (a) the Web Linking Service (WLS), a novel open hypermedia system that stores and exchanges metadata in RDF standard syntax for hypertext structures across the wire and (b) two case studies in which applications offer to their users the ability to create linking structures upon existing contents by making use the WLS service.

There is a demand for efforts that deal with the challenges associated to the complex and time-consuming task of developing context-aware applications. These challenges include context modeling, reuse and reasoning, and software infrastructures intended to context management. This paper presents a service infrastructure for the management of semantic context called Semantic Context Kernel. The novelty is a set of semantic services that can be personalized according to context-aware applications’ requirements so as to support the prototyping of such applications. The Semantic Context Kernel has been built upon an ontological context model, which provides Semantic Web abstractions to foster context reuse and reasoning.

In this paper we present our efforts on including semantic information on a middleware for message exchanging. The middleware configuration module makes use of a rule-based reasoner that infers the best module to be used on a given configuration of network and application. We have learned that a semantic-enabled message exchanging middleware is useful to decouple not only the application from the underlying communication facilities, but also the middleware itself from the task of selecting the appropriate module for a given configuration of application and underlying network.

Nowadays there has been a lack of research on software engineering issues for context-aware computing. Building upon concepts of the Semantic Web, we present the POCAp software process for developing context-aware applications that make use of ontology-based context information.

A relevant issue on linking services based on information retrieval techniques is how to define scopes that delimit homogeneous information so as to obtain good results. An interesting way to achieve this is to provide such scope delimitation by means of context information. This process of linking can be tailored according to contextual constraints explicitly provided by users. We propose linking services enhanced with context information captured from everyday presentations. We present the LinkDigger context service, which creates hyperlinks following information obtained from users. As a result, different hypertexts can be defined upon the same information.

While research in context-aware computing has produced useful results, few software engineering solutions for context-aware computing have been reported. Building upon concepts of the Semantic Web, the POCAp software process is an alternative towards supporting the development of ontology-based context-aware applications. In order to demonstrate the use of POCAp, we present a case study of a Web-based recommender system extended with an OWL-based context model and a semantic-enabled software infrastructure. Using POCAp, developers can take advantage of the organization and the dependence between POCAp activities, mainly from those intended to the applications context model as well as the services for processing that model.
