INTRODUCTION: Cervicalgia of mechanical origin is a musculoskeletal dysfunction that affects a lot of people in their daily lives. One of Physiotherapy tools to deal with it is Positional Release Therapy (PRT), an indirect methodology in which tender points and a comfortable position to cure the associated dysfunction are used. OBJECTIVE: This studys objective was to compare the level of pain, the amplitude of movement and the muscular strength before and after performing PRT. METHODS: It was examined following an analytic, interventional and randomized study where two groups, the interventional and the control, were composed of patients diagnosed with cervicalgia under the care of ASCES clinic-school. RESULTS: The results showed a statistically significant improvement in the therapeutic intervention group where examined variables were 100% accurate. CONCLUSION: Based upon our results, PRT has proven to be an efficient and beneficial technique that can be used in already existing treatments of cervicalgia patients with musculoskeletal dysfunction.

Objective: To verify the ergonomic adequacy of the classrooms and the level of comfort attributed by the students at the school environment of a private academic institution, in the city of Recife, Pernambuco. Methods: A series of cases, cross-sectional and descriptive study conducted from August to September, 2006, having as its population the students from the following courses: Physiotherapy, Law, Tourism, Information Systems and International Relations. The sample consisted of 126 students selected by accidental sampling. The comfort level was evaluated regarding the classrooms’ ergonomic adequacy in accordance to temperature, noise and luminosity, while for the seats the evaluation occurred by the comparison of their dimensions to the norms determined by ABNT (Brazilian Association of Norms and Techniques) and the students’ anthropometric measures. Also, they were questioned about muscular and skeletal referred complaints and the disturbance at their extra-classes activities. Results: It was observed that items related to temperature, luminosity and noise were insignificant. It was verified that the seat dimensions were away of the technical norms and inadequate for the students’ anthropometric measures. It was observed that 104 (82.54%) of the students referred one or more complaints of local pains, being 75 (35.71%) at cervical column and 74 (35.24%) at lumbar column. Among those that referred pain, 75 (60.32%) said that these symptoms also disturbed them at their extra-classes activities. Conclusion: In the studied sample, the school seat was the main factor of referred discomfort, which shows the importance of its ergonomic improvement and regarding the questions related to luminosity, temperature and noise, the presented complaints were not significant.

A descriptive study of observational and cross-sectional approach in which was used an Ergonomics and Posture Questionnaire for Dentists adapted by the researchers, associated with the Cooler Quiz. The sample comprised 43 students who attended between the 6th, 8th and 10th academic periods. The data were submitted to descriptive analysis and expressed as percentages, means and standard deviations, also maximum and minimum. For the comparative analysis between the variables, we used the chi-square test, chi-square test with Yates correction or Fisher exact test, when necessary, considering the significance level of 5%. Results: Among the students surveyed 20 (46.51%) were men and 23 (53.5%) women with a mean age of 23.14 ± 10.24 years, maximum of 35 years and minimum of 19. It was found that 40 (93.02%) reported pain in some part of the body, 23 (53.5%) in the upper limbs, 20 (46.5%) in the lower limbs and 37 (86%) in axial skeleton, with no difference between genders (p = 0.59). Pain intensity was classified as mild 10 (25%), moderate 21(52.5%) and severe 7 (17.5%). In the assessment we evidenced the direct correlation between the hours of trainning and the intensity of pain. Conclusions: The results of the survey showed that the students assessed developed high frequency of musculoskeletal pain and that pain was associated with hours of daily training held during graduation at the dental clinic.
