Passage-averaged Navier-Stokes equations with finite element applications

This work is part of an ongoing systematic effort to develop computational methods for analysis of hydraulic rotating machinery flowfields. Its purpose is to develop a mathematical model for the closure of the passage-averaged Navier-Stokes equations. Successful solution of these partial differential equations requires that the problem be mathematically well posed. So far, proofs of existence and uniqueness of the solution subject to the closure requirements are incomplete but encouraging. The closure requirements lead to the investigating the construction of solution algorithms through variational formulations using mixed and penalty methods. The closure model and the passageaveraged equations are incorporated into a finite element computer code.
