The inclusion of the other in ourselves: reception and comprehension of refugees in Portugal

Abstract The intensification of different types of migration movements during the last decades is an expression of growing interconnections at the global level. The so called ‘refugee crisis’ is the most visible sign of this intensification. It currently challenges societies to rethink the processes of integrating those fleeing from humanitarian crises and wars. Portuguese civil society has pioneered the creation of a Refugee Support Platform, aimed to address the challenges associated with the arrival of refugee families. Within this platform, an e-learning course was created to help institutions and host families prepare for this task. In the article we first describe this course, focusing our analysis on the relevance of this initiative for institutions, families, and private citizens that wish to welcome refugees in Portugal. We then briefly reflect on the literature pertaining to intercultural dialogue and social tensions. In the final section we analyse the voices of those who attended the course. We conclude with an analysis of the contents of the course modules and the participation of the trainees as a contribution to their self-transformation.

Usos e abusos do formal e não formal em educação Uses and abuses of formal and non-formal education

Este texto esta dividido em dois andamentos. No primeiro andamento, procura-se desconstruir adicotomia tao redutora entre formal e informal na Educacao em geral e na Educacao Social, em particular. Entendemos que a Pedagogia Social, mais interessada na (trans)formacao pessoal e social, e a Antropologia da Educacao, mais no estudo dos processos educativos, se interpenetram derrubando muros como o formal/nao formal/informal e ainda o escolar e nao escolar, salientando o processo educativo como um processo complexo e global que decorre entre o nascimento e a morte. Tanto uma como outra, a Pedagogia Social e a Antropologia da Educacao, preferem atualmente, optar pelo uso da dimensao nao escolar, por contraponto a logica da escola, ao inves de nao formal. O segundo andamento do texto centra-se na Pedagogia Social como ciencia matriz da Educacao Social (CARIDE,2005) e nas competencias do educador social que se autonomiza relativamente ao trabalho social pelo seu carater pedagogico que determina os seus modelos de atuacao, quer na escola, quer para alem da escola, quer em espacos e tempos mais formais, quer menos formais.

Life Stories, Cultural Métissage, and Personal Identities:

This article encompasses an underlying notion of personal identities and processes of interaction, which distinguish essentialist identity from relational identity in contexts involving subjects, fields of possibilities, and cultural metamorphosis. It addresses the idea of the individual and her/his transformations: “I am who I want to be if I can be that person.” Any one of us could hypothetically have been someone else. The question of the reconstruction of individual identities is a vital aspect in the relationship between objective social conditions and what each person subjectively does with them, in terms of auto-construction. The complexity of this question reflects the idea of a cultural kaleidoscope, in which similar social conditions experienced by different individuals can produce differentiated identities. The title and structure of this text also seek to encompass the idea that in a personal life story, the subject lives between various spheres and sociocultural contexts, with a composite, mestizo, and superimposed or displaced identity, in each context. This occurs as the result of a cultural metamorphosis, which is constructed both by the individual as well as by heterogeneous influences between the context of the starting and finishing points at a given moment. This complex process of cultural metamorphosis—the fruit of interweaving subjective and objective forces—reveals a new dimension: the truly composite nature of personal identities.

Entrando no Interior da Escola: etnografia e entrevistas etnográficas

Neste texto, depois de procurarem desconstruir a falsa oposicao binaria qualitativo-quantitativo, propondo um politeismo metodologico, os autores centram-se nos paradigmas hermeneuticos e fenomenologicos, onde inscrevem a etnografia como abordagem que pode recorrer a diversas tecnicas no sentido de compreender os sentidos que os atores sociais atribuem as suas praticas. Num segundo momento, mostram como a etnografia e a particularidade das entrevistas etnograficas sao uma forma de aceder compreensivamente a dimensao interior da escola, buscando e construindo com os sujeitos sentidos e significados que as abordagens sistemicas tem descurado e transformado na caixa negra da instituicao escolar.

IDENTIDADES, INTERCULTURALIDADE E EDUCAÇÃO: UMA ANÁLISE ANTROPOLÓGICA

Tres ideias estruturam este texto: 1 - A educacao e mais que escolarizacao. Se o sentido corrente da palavra Educacao remete o ensino e a aprendizagem para o dominio das aulas e das escolas, a verdade e que a escolarizacao da as criancas e jovens pequeno contributo para a inculturacao e construcao identitaria. 2 - O social e o individual passam pelo individuo, nao apenas o individuo pelos contextos, tornando-o multiplo, plural, mestico, construido em continuidades e descontinuidade numa educacao intercultural. 3 - A Mediacao Intercultural, assente em referencia da Pedagogia Social, distanciando-se da pura resolucao de conflitos e posicionando-se numa perspetiva preventiva; mas, tambem, e essencialmente, transformadora das relacoes sociais, procura mudar situacoes sociais que geram injusticas, carencias ou revoltas, sempre com o envolvimento dos implicados, como busca da convivencia num processo educativo intercultural.

Consideramos a Antropologia da Educacao como estudo dos processos educativos, seja na escola, na familia, na rua ou na trajectoria social dos individuos e seu papel na (re)construcao das identidades pessoais. A partir de pesquisas realizadas em Portugal, procuro mostrar como as etnobiografias sao um caminho privilegiado para entender as pessoas como resultado de uma bricolagem identitaria e como sao, tambem, meios de (auto)formacao. Exploro as potencialidades das entrevistas etnobiograficas e grupais, na racionalizacao das experiencias passadas, para a Antropologia da Educacao na formacao para a diversidade cultural.
