Dyke-Davidoff-Masson syndrome: imaging features with illustration of two cases

Richa Arora; Jyotsna Y. Rani

Dyke-Davidoff-Masson syndrome is a rare entity characterized by hemi cerebral atrophy/hypoplasia secondary to brain insult in fetal or early childhood period along with ipsilateral compensatory osseous hypertrophy and contralateral hemiparesis. We present two cases of this uncommon condition and discuss its imaging features, differential diagnosis, treatment options and prognosis.

Imaging features on sonography and MRI in a case of lipofibromatous hamartoma of the median nerve.

Richa Arora; Abhishek J. Arora

Lipofibromatous hamartomas are rare benign tumours of Peripheral nerves. Median nerve is most common affected nerve involved in about 80 percent of the cases. Approximately 92 cases have been reported so far. We present a case of lipofibromatous hamartoma of median nerve diagnosed on sonography and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). These rare lesions are an important entity to be known to radiologists because their imaging features are quite pathognomonic and allow for confident diagnosis negating the need for biopsy.

Massive alveolar haemorrhage: a rare life threatening complication of Wegener's granulomatosis—report of a rare case

Richa Arora

Massive diffuse alveolar haemorrhage (DAH) is an unusual, frequently life threatening and still treatable complication of Wegeners granulomatosis (WG) associated with mortality in more than 66% of cases. DAH is a syndrome that can be a manifestation of variety of disorders. WG, a multisystem necrotising granulomatous vasculitis should always be considered as a possible etiological factor in these patients with or without involvement of other systems, as an early diagnosis and aggressive management with cytotoxic drugs offer best chances of survival in these patients. We report a rare case of 45-year-old woman who presented with massive hemoptysis in accident and emergency department and subsequently diagnosed as WG, and discuss the differential diagnosis and review the literature of this rare complication of WG. Approximately 41 cases have been reported so far of this rare complication.

Becoming a doctor in India: once a cherished dream, no longer cherished though

Richa Arora

Unlike last century when medicine was the most sought after profession and was the first choice of most brilliant students in high school, currently many pupils prefer to opt for other streams like information technology, engineering, management courses etc. This is for several reasons. This article intends to highlight the major difficulties faced by the medical students and trainee doctors in India.

Richa Arora; Surya Ramachandra Varma Gunturi; Abhishek J. Arora; Abhijot Parmar

This case report describes a rare and serious case of acid ingestion in a 50-year-old man who developed necrosis and perforation of gastric fundus and diaphragm with extension of air and fluid collection in the thorax. To the best of our knowledge, this complication has not been described so far in the literature.

Incidental finding of elongated ventral duct in a case of pancreatic divisum mimicking double pancreatic ducts on magnetic resonance cholangiopancreaticography—a rare normal variant

Richa Arora; Y. Jyotsna Rani

Anatomic variations and developmental anomalies of the pancreas and pancreatic duct are often noticed as an incidental finding on imaging. However, knowledge of these variants may prove to be crucial during surgery as it may prevent unintentional ductal injury. We report a case of pancreatic divisum with codominant ventral duct mimicking double pancreatic ducts along with the elongated uncinate process of pancreas. It was picked incidentally on magnetic resonance cholangiopancreaticography (MRCP) done to rule out cholelithiasis and choledocholithiasis. It is a rare anatomic variant and to the best of our knowledge has not been reported so far.

Tracheal septum: real or virtual?

Abhishek J. Arora; Richa Arora

Tracheal septum has never been reported in human beings, though its a common occurrence in few lower vertebrates. We are presenting a case of thick tracheal secretion that appeared as a midline tracheal septum and prompted the clinician to go for bronchoscopy.

The training and practice of radiology in India: current trends

Richa Arora

Radiology is one of the most sought after specialties in medicine and it is the first choice of many top-rankers in India for almost a decade. This is for the reason that diagnostics have become an integral part of most patients’ work-up due to existing practice of evidence-based medicine. More importantly, rapid advancements in imaging have further increased its demand.

Increased renal corticomedullary FDG activity in a patient of NHL-malignant or benign?

Abhishek J. Arora; Tushar Mohapatra; Sikandar Shaikh; Richa Arora

Authors describe diagnostic dilemma of differentiating pyelonephritis with lymphomatous involvement of kidney in a known case of lymphoma. FDG uptake pattern was non-discriminatory and pyelonephritis diagnosed retrospectively on follow up study. Authors emphasize the importance of recognition of features and subtle clues of infection evident on CT component of PET-CT.
