Aging bears its own meaning as it is reflected and interpreted by each individual. Because that individuality is often lost in the blurring of society and the assumptions (often not founded in facts) about older adults, assumptions become truths and the truths are often misunderstood or otherwise overlooked. Common to older adults, in varying degrees, is the presence of loss. Society often views aging as a loss. There are the cumulative effects of the deaths of loved ones and friends, workplace issues, health concerns, changes in social structure, spiritual concerns and loss of influence or a sense of presence to name a few. This article explores the many aspects of loss and how to more sensitively respond to the needs of those in search of information, reassurance, solace and support.
