The MEGA experiment, which searched for the muon- and electron-number violating decay μ +→e + γ, is described. The spectrometer system, the calibrations, the data taking procedures, the data analysis, and the sensitivity of the experiment are discussed. The most stringent upper limit on the branching ratio, B(μ + →e + γ)l1.2×10 -11 with 90% confidence, is derived from a likelihood analysis.

Abstract A search for neutrino oscillations of the type ν μ → ν c has been conducted at the Los Alamos Meson Physics Facility using ν μ from muon decay at rest. Evidence for this transition has been reported previously. This paper discusses in detail the experimental setup, detector operation and neutrino source, including aspects relevant to oscillation searches in the muon decay-at-rest and pion decay in flight channels.

Abstract A spectrometer for the detection of neutral pions in nuclear physics research was designed, constructed, and tested at the Los Alamos Meson Physics Facility. It is capable of detecting neutral pions with high efficiency, and with a fwhm energy resolution of 2 MeV with a typical acceptance of 1 msr. In the first experiment in which the spectrometer was used, its performance was evaluated, and nuclear physics research, based on the detection of neutral pions, was performed.

This Letter reports a new experimental search for the family-number-nonconserving decay ..mu../sup +/ ..-->.. e/sup +/..gamma... There is no evidence for the presence of this decay mode. The upper limit for the branching ratio is GAMMA(..mu.. ..-->.. e..gamma..)/GAMMA(..mu.. ..-->.. enu anti nu) < 4.9 x 10/sup -11/ (90% C.L.). 13 refs., 3 figs.

The reaction [sup 12]C([nu][sub [mu]],[mu][sup [minus]])[ital X] has been measured near threshold using a [pi][sup +] decay-in-flight [nu][sub [mu]] beam from the Los Alamos Meson Physics Facility and a massive liquid scintillator neutrino detector (LSND). In the energy region 123.7[lt][ital E][sub [nu]][lt]280 MeV, the measured spectral shape is consistent with that expected from the Fermi-gas model (FGM). However, the measured flux-averaged inclusive cross section [l brace][8.3[plus minus]0.7(stat)[plus minus]1.6(syst)][times]10[sup [minus]40] cm[sup 2][r brace] is more than a factor of 2 lower than that predicted by the Fermi-gas model and by a recent random phase approximation calculation.
