Downsizing and turbocharging combined with direct injection are regarded as a key technology to allow petrol engines to cope with the challenges of fuel economy enhancement and driveability improvement. Stratified part load operation can be a solution even for downsized engines if the maximum fuel economy potential of a spray-guided petrol direct injection combustion system is available, as shown by Ford’s analysis of the stratified window size impact on cycle fuel economy.
