Patient-based approach

Richard Hatchett

I liked this book, particularly because I could answer a fair amount of the questions while passing time on a long train journey. The text presents a series of 26 case studies ranging from the differing acute coronary syndromes, to pericarditis, aortic stenosis, bacterial endocarditis and complete heart block. Each is offered in the same layout, commencing with a brief scenario and a series of questions augmented by additional data including good quality 12-lead ECGs. The questions and answers all conclude with a case review and key points.

Holistic care and the place of complementary therapies

Richard Hatchett; David R. Thompson

Many thanks to Chris Jones for his recent review of our new text, Cardiac nursing: a comprehensive guide (British Journal of Cardiac Nursing Volume 3, No. 3, p127) He raised two issues that are worth clarifying. It’s important for us to fly the flag for complementary therapies in cardiac care because many patients will experience their heart condition as a chronic disorder affecting their quality of life. We therefore asked Professor Suen to review the variety of approaches that can basically make the person feel better. In addition, there was the need to consider whether any of the therapies could affect risk factors such as cholesterol and hypertension, which may reduce further risk of coronary events.

A cross-continent view of adult congenital heart disease

Richard Hatchett

Advances in paediatric cardiology and cardiac surgery mean that the majority of patients with congenital heart defects will survive childhood. Figures are hard to obtain, but such people represent a growing population who will ultimately make their way to adult cardiac services. In the United Kingdom (UK) there are an estimated 150 000 adults with congenital heart disease.
