Effectiveness of a brief counseling intervention in stimulating vocational exploration

Dale J. Prediger; Richard J. Noeth

Abstract The intervention procedures used in this study, a brief report of vocational interest scores and small group sessions on vocational planning, were designed to encourage girls to consider the full range of occupations, unrestricted by sex-role stereotypes. In each of three schools, ninth-grade girls with average academic ability or above were randomly assigned to an intervention group ( N = 195) and a control group ( N = 195). Analyses of 1- and 3-month outcome data indicated that the intervention stimulated occupational exploration and increased congruence between occupational preferences and measured interests. Outcomes differed according to interest type, thus suggesting that certain students may need more counselor attention than others.

The effects of enhancing expressed vocational choice with career development measures to predict occupational field

Richard J. Noeth

Abstract The prediction of actual occupation from expressed vocational choice when enhanced by measures of career development is described. Subjects were those junior class members of a national study of student career development who were working more than half time 3 years later ( N = 1994). Choices and occupations were both categorized into Holland-type job clusters, and selected scales from the Assessment of Career Development (ACD) were used. Weighted hit rates and coefficient kappa were computed. The criterion was occupation held 2 years after high school. The ACD scales taken separately and in combination did not contribute to the predictive accuracy of vocational choice. High-scoring students on the ACD were not better predictors of their future occupations than were low-scoring students.
