The brevity of the time allotted to me for this retrospect compels me to content myself with a sketch in rough outlines, for to follow the temptation to go at all into details would necessitate a far longer paper than could be read in twenty-five minutes. After all, it may be questioned whether a longer review is desirable in a paper to be presented on an occasion like this. It is extremely helpful at times to take a general survey of ground traversed, so that we may know whence we have come, how far we have traveled, and whither we are marching.
