An evaluation of several multiple access schemes against UMTS criteria has been carried out within the European FRAMES project. Based on this comprehensive evaluation, a harmonised radio interface termed FRAMES multiple access (FMA) has been designed consisting of two operating modes: a wideband TDMA mode with and without spreading (FMA1), and a wideband CDMA mode (FMA2). This paper describes the FMA1 radio access system proposal. The FMA2 proposal is described in Ovesjo et al.

Mobile industry will face several disruptive changes in coming years. Emerging digital convergence will bring new exiting multifunctional products for consumers but it also put new requirements for the product development. Shift from vertical to horizontal mode will bring deep impact to the R&D of the whole mobile industry. Emerging dominant platforms and architectures will challenge the whole community to maintain the spirit of open innovation instead of ending up to dominance of one or two key players. In this presentation we are considering the challenges and requirements for the future architectures, and open up our thinking what are the right architectural directions to go

In the digital convergence era, new products are created at ever faster pace by combining and integrating existing and new technologies in innovative ways. Designers of these products are already facing immense productivity and quality demands. We need new architectural thinking to address the demands of the future. We need to achieve very high-level of reuse and at the same time manage the system complexity. Platformization and modularity are the key to do this. The key to true system modularity is an architectural model where the functional and physical architecture are aligned.
