In this paper, and in Part II to be published later, we give an account of the chemistry of gold(I) complexes with C-, N-, and S-donor ligands. In this first part, the synthesis of gold(I) complexes with alkynyl and N-donor ligands is reported.

The 1 : 1 reaction of [Au(acac)(PPh3)](Hacac = acetylacetone) with ammonium salts [HL]X (X = CF3SO3, L = 2-nitroaniline, 4-methoxyaniline, NHPh2 or NHEt2; X = ClO4, L = NMe3) in diethyl ether gave complexes [Au(PPh3)L]X and acetylacetone. The crystal structure of [Au(PPh3)(NMe3)][ClO4] was determined; orthorhombic, space group P212121, a= 9.498(2), b= 10.322(2), c= 26.154(4)A, wR(F2) 0.091. The gold atom is linearly co-ordinated to both ligands [Au–P 2.231(2), Au–N 2.108(7)A, P–Au–N 179.3(2)°] and no intermolecular Au ‥ Au contacts exist.

In these two papers we report the chemistry of gold(I) complexes with C-, N-, and S-donor ligands, as recently published by our group, and describe some previously unpublished results. In Part I, the synthesis of alkynyl, amino, imino and nitrido gold(I) complexes was reported (1). In this part, we give an account of the synthesis of gold(I) complexes with sulfur-containing ligands such as sulfur ylides, hydrosulfido, sulfido, trithiocarbonato, dithiocarbimato and 1, 1-ethylenedithiolato.

The complex [Au(acetonine)2]ClO4 (3·ClO4) (acetonine = 2,2,4,4,6-pentamethyl-2,3,4,5-tetrahydropyrimidine) is obtained by bubbling NH3 through an acetone solution containing equimolar amounts of NaClO4 and [AuCl(tht)] (tht = tetrahydrothiophene); the crystal structure of 3·ClO4 was determined by X-ray crystallography.
