Dicyclopentadiene hydroformylation catalyzed by RhxCo4-x(CO)12 (x = 4, 2-0)/tertiary amine catalysts [1]

Douglas L. Hunter; Stanley E. Moore; Philip E. Garrou; Robert A. Dubois

Abstract The hydroformylation of dicyclopentadiene (DCPD) has been examined using catalyst systems comprising Rh x Co 4-x (CO) 12 (x= 4, 2-0) clusters bonded to tertiary amines or commercially available tertiary amine resins. Cluster composition effects the rate of the reaction only in the first few hours of catalyst life. While the rate determining step is initially the hydroformylation of the cyclopentene portion of the DCPD, aldehyde hydrogenation becomes rate limiting as the catalyst deactivates.

Deactivation of rhodium hydroformylation catalysts on amine functionalized organic supports [1]

Douglas L. Hunter; Stanley E. Moore; Robert A. Dubois; Philip E. Garrou

Abstract Catalyst lifetime studies have been conducted with rhodium-loaded, commercially-available amine functionalized resins for the hydroformylation/reduction of di-cyclopentadiene to dicyclopentadienedimethanol. Dowex® MWA-1 was chemically stableand no catalyst deactivation resulted; whereas, Amberlite® IRA-68 and Reilly-8050 underwent chemical reactions and catalyst deactivation resulted. The chemicaldeactivation results from a change in the tertiary nitrogen/rhodium interaction that is required for the aldehyde reduction. Consequently, as the catalyst deactivates, the aldehyde reduction is slower.
