Summary The study of premature mortality remains an important one. In 1938,31,100 neonatal deaths were reported by the United States Bureau of the Census as directly due to premature birth. We have presented the following: 1. A comparative mortality study among the 859 premature birthsat the Charity Hospital of Louisiana, in New Orleans, over the years 1937–1940 inclusive. 2. The main causes of the 498 deaths occurring in the series studied, using the standard weight groups adopted by the American Academy of Pediatrics for tabulation. 3. The average term of ife in each weight group of the premature infants who died. 4. Our observation of the factors responsible for the decrease inmortality at Charity Hospital and suggestions therefrom for the continued and further lowering of the mortality rate.

The literature on the problem of nuclear proliferation has expanded in the last few years in proportion to the increased salience of the problem. Preventing the spread of nuclear weapons — an important item on the international agenda in the 1960s — receded somewhat from public attention after the successful negotiation of the Nonproliferation Treaty (NPT) in 1968. It re-emerged as a critical issue in the mid-1970s following the Indian nuclear test and the Arab oil embargo, which increased the economic and political incentives for the rapid development of proliferation-prone nuclear energy technologies.
