The SWEBOK guide is a project of the IEEE Computer Society and is designed to characterize the discipline of software engineering and to provide a topical guide to the literature describing the generally accepted knowledge within the discipline. The trial version of the SWEBOK guide has been published in December 2001. The paper reviews a selection of the trial usages of the SWEBOK guide in the field of software engineering education. It also describes the links between the SWEBOK guide project and other initiatives in the field, notable the computing curricula-software engineering.

This workshop will: provide an overview of the project and its deliverables; prepare you to be a reviewer of one or more of its deliverables; enable you to provide input to the editorial team to ensure all stakeholder points of view and intended usages have been fully taken into account in the project deliverables and development process. Workshop results will be used to improve the project deliverable, review instructions and will be provided to the Knowledge Area specialists so they can interpret correctly and to the fullest extent possible the various stakeholder viewpoints when handling the review comments.

The workshop will present a survey of the current uses of the trial version of the Software Engineering Body of Knowledge (SWEBOK) guide in education. From this survey and from the discussions in other workshops, the participants will be asked to work on the appropriate ways to gather more information from the users, and on how to modify the guide in order for it to play its role in education more appropriately. This will include its relationship with SEEK (Software Engineering Education Knowledge) and the list of topics used as a basis for the curriculum.

The Guide to the SWEBOK project is ending the Stone Man phase and a first operational version of the Guide will be published in the Spring of 2000. The project team is currently planning the subsequent Iron Man phase which will focus heavily on promoting and experimenting the Guide in various contexts. In order to evaluate the usability and adequacy of the Guide for educational purposes, field trials will be organized and some will be monitored by the project team. This brief document presents the objectives, the format and the projected output of this workshop.
