Benign Strictures of Bile Ducts

Robert E. Hermann

This book is written by three surgeons from the Moscow Medical Institute and has been translated from Russian into English. The book presents an encyclopedic review of the subject of benign strictures of the bile ducts. The writing throughout is somewhat wordy and nonobjective. The book begins in a rather unsophisticated way with a review of the terminology and classification of various types of bile duct strictures. These have been classified by the authors according to their etiology and by the level of the ductal lesion, degree of narrowing, extent of the stricture, and clinical course of the patient. Benign posttraumatic strictures, strictures of previous biliary anastomoses, secondary inflammatory strictures from other lesions, and primary sclerosing cholangitis are all covered. Several chapters are devoted to the causes of strictures, their clinical manifestations, methods of diagnosis, preparing the patient for surgery, principles of surgery for bile duct strictures, operative techniques of

Surgery of the Pancreas

Robert E. Hermann

This is a comprehensive textbook devoted to the multiple problems of one organ, the pancreas. It is edited and predominantly written by one surgeon, John R. Brooks, MD, an experienced gastrointestinal surgeon who has been interested in pancreatic disease for many years, with contributions by 26 colleagues who have written additional chapters. The book is well written and should appeal to all general surgeons in practice who deal with pancreatic diseases. It will additionally serve as an excellent reference text for surgical residents in training, gastroenterologists, internists, and medical students. The book is logically constructed with an excellent historical section tracing studies on and knowledge of the pancreas, from its earliest known mention in 300 BC up to the 1980s. The anatomy, embryology, biochemistry, physiology, and pathology of the pancreas are all well covered in clear chapters. Radiographic and other diagnostic studies are well presented with excellent angiograms, computed tomographic

Introduction to Abdominal Surgery: 50 Clinical Studies

Robert E. Hermann

This is an excellent book by the late Clarence J. Schein, MD, and is a fitting epitaph in the surgical literature for this distinguished surgeon and surgical educator. The 50 casestudies cover the broad range of surgical problems that occur in the abdomen. They have been taken from the teaching conferences at the Montefiore Hospital and Medical Center, Bronx, NY, that were organized by Dr Schein. The cases are given in a realistic fashion with the chief complaint and history and, occasionally, brief physical findings in an introductory paragraph. The reader is then asked to make a tentative or provisional diagnosis. A discussion follows based on the initial presentation and findings. A more complete physical examination and results of laboratory and roentgenographic studies are then given, a differential diagnosis is made and discussed, and therapeutic alternatives are provided. The operative approach and brief discussion of operative technique and perioperative management
