Microbiological synthesis of C14-uniformly labeled L(+)- and D(-)-lactate.

Abstract A microbiological method has been devised for the synthesis of C 14 -uniformly labeled l (+)- and d (−)-lactic acids. The antipodes were isolated as the zinc salts and were characterized by water of crystallization; optical rotation; elemental analysis of carbon, hydrogen, and ash; and homogeneity by paper chromatography. Free lactic acid for use in metabolic studies was prepared by passing a solution of zinc lactate through Dowex-50.

Abstract Iodoacetate and fluoride depress nonoxidative pyruvate utilization in heart slices without affecting respiration, whereas, malonate reduces both respiration and 3-carbon acid anabolism. Lactate utilization was inhibited by iodoacetate and malonate but not by fluoride A possible explanation of these results is discussed.
