Synthesis and resolution of the antibiotic phosphonomycin are described. The structure is (—)(IR, 2S)-1,2-epoxypropylphosphonic acid.

The avermectins, a family of new anthelmintic agents, were isolated from the mycelia of Streptomyces avermitilis. Four closely related major components and four homologous minor components were separated from the complex. Solvent extraction, solvent partition, and adsorption methods were used to isolate and purify the complex; novel partition chromatography systems using Sephadex LH-20 were used to separate the components. A reverse-phase high-pressure liquid chromatography assay for the quantitative determination of all components was used extensively to monitor the purification methods.

Urinary Metabolites in Parkinson's Disease

Although DMPEA does not seem to be a component of the pink spot in Parkinsonism, high urinary concentrations of tryptamine may be associated with some cases of the disease. This suggests that in such cases tryptamine hydroxylation is defective.

Similarity of Albomycin and Grisein.

Albomycin and grisein were found to be composed of four antibiotically active substances of which A, a strongly active component, and D, a very weakly active component, appear to be stable to purification, while C has been observed to break down continually with concomitant appearance of more A. On the basis of published reports and of studies made in our laboratories, it is concluded that albomycin and grisein are chemically very similar and identical with respect to antimicrobial activity (5).

Characterization of phosphonomycin by microchromatographic and related techniques

Abstract Phosphonomycin has been characterized by R F values and color reactions in a variety of chromatographic systems which include thin-layer and paper chromatography. Gas-liquid chromatography was carried out on the di-trimethylsilyl derivative. The gas-liquid chromatography peak was identified by mass spectrometry. Paper chromatography was adapted for purification of a crude concentrate and the purity monitored by gas-liquid chromatography.
